Issue40:
"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Words: 545

The issue asserts that scholars and researches should concentrate more about pursuing their individual interests not their work contributions and no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic they may seem. In my viewpoint, I agree with the former views and disagree with the latter one.

Temporary society seems takes more concern about scholars and researchers` contribution to the larger society. The mass media are likely to report about how celebrated scholars or researchers take much effort and even give up own happiness in order to benefit society, because it ignores the main impetus for these scholars and researchers is interests, it makes an illusion that one must pursue their contribution to the larger society not own individual interests. An instance is that some students prefer to choose a major that may make the most concentration to society instead of a one interested themselves. Does this chooses is right? The answer is wrong. After analysis these celebrated scholars or researchers thoroughly, many of them did not concerned about their researches that contribute to society but it is their interests promoted them to do these researches. Marie Gurie is an example that was taking chemistry as her interest and then finally she got the Nobel price. She did not know how great contribution made to society at the beginning of her research, she just did it spring from her own interest. Furthermore, over concerned about their contribution and ignore interests can hardly become success. Because research needs make much effect, if one has no interest to it, He or she may give up during researching time. One example is that my friend chooses pharmaceutics major in graduate study because he want make contribution to save patients` lives, unfortunately, he do not interested in it. After years of study, he found it is difficult to learn courses in this major, he have to give up. So, no matter how great contribution you want make to the society, no interest, no possibility.

After analysis scholars and researches should pursue their own interests, while not the contribution to society, the next discuss is scholars and researchers should pursue their individual interests no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem. Of cause not, interests must be measured by moral and law. Admittedly, some great contributions are deriving from/ emerging from unusual and idiosyncratic interest. For example, Von Nouman interested making machines and using them to solve math counting which was seemed an unusual interest at that time, because this unusual interest, the first computer finally bored and then changed our modern society`s lifestyles. From this view point, it seems some unusual interest has positive effects, but some unusual interest researches such as programming cyber virus, harmful bacteria and so on. These researches may bring us negative effects. Cyber virus can broke normal internet works and make some valuable information lost, and harmful bacteria may attack healthy body that will make many people got sick or even died. Because these interests touch the bottom of human moral and law, they must be prohibited.

In conclusion, to pursue interests is more important for scholars and researcher than to concern how bigger contribution they can make, but some unusual or idiosyncratic interests that may run counter to moral or law must be prohibited.
