225.The following appeared as part of a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.

"During her three years in office, Governor Riedeburg has shown herself to be a worthy leader. Since she took office, crime has decreased, the number of jobs created per year has doubled, and the number of people choosing to live in our state has increased. These trends are likely to continue if she is reelected. In addition, Ms. Riedeburg has promised to take steps to keep big companies here, thereby providing jobs for any new residents. Anyone who looks at Ms. Riedeburg's record can tell that she is the best-qualified candidate for governor."

By comparing the present social conditions-decrease of committed crimes, growth of job opportunities and expansion of popularity- with the past three years, the author claims that the Governor Riedeburg is indeed a worthy leader and best-qualified candidate for governor. To further support it, the author cites the governor’s promise that she will keep big companies stay to supply jobs for new residents. All above seems persuasive to judge the governor as a great leader, but there are several aspects unsubstantiated after scrutiny.

To begin with, the author claims that Governor Reideburg’s three-year leadership is attributable to the social change. However, the author builds up an unreasonable causal relationship between them and overlooks other factors which make a difference. The diminishment of committed crime may result from a newly enacted rigid law designed to improve the order of society and perhaps the increase of job opportunity dues to a booming economy in stead of the governor’s management. Similarly, a more clement climate and better social security can lead considerable amounts of individuals to select this state to settle down. Without ruling out these possible alternative explanations, the author cannot hastily conclude that the governor’s performance in office is excellent.

Even assuming that Governor Riedeburg is a great leader who brings about the recent prosperity in the state, the author falsely predicts that the trend will continue as long as she is reelected. Since there is plenty of uncertainty in the future, we cannot exactly tell what will happen next. An economy depression may occur or perhaps the governor might fall into corruption and embezzle the taxes revenue, consequently retards the pace of social and economic development.

Moreover, there is no evidence that the governor would realize her commitment that she will make effort to keep the big companies stay thus can provide more occupation for new citizens. Since we do not know the personality and traits of the governor, we cannot be informed that whether she is an honest person and will practice what she preach. Even she keeps up her words, the state might no longer be a suitable place for those big companies, and thereby they have to move to a more applicable site. In addition, there may be counterproductive effects to keep them here, for instant, tax evasion, environment pollution, exploitation of workforces and et cetera.

Even if she is and will be an excellent leader that worthy to be reelected, the author fails to take other potential candidates account. Perhaps the candidates competing for governor this year are all prominent in their office work. Without comparison between overall candidates, we cannot conclude unjustifiably that the Governor Riedeburg is best-qualified.

In sum, to be convincing, the author must provide direct evidence that the governor’s performance attributes to the prosperity. Furthermore, the author should illustrate her strong personality to be persuadable as she will likely to consist with her previous behavior. At last, the comparison between all candidates is needed to judge the most appropriate candidacy.
