The leader, if he or she wants to be effective, should maintain ethical and moral standards, as well as some other merits.
First of all, to maintain ethical and moral plays a vital role in a public official. Before someone becomes the leader, he or she must be a qualified citizen. What are a qualified citizen's characters? I think the most important are the ethicalness and morality. Being moral and ethical is the first step for one person to be accepted by the others in the society. If someone stands at the opposite side, for example, being evil, he or she will not be welcomed in the society. Every society has its own bottom line of the morality and ethicality, and everyone in the society must stay above it. So to the leader, who will lead us to a more advanced, more convenient, more harmonious life, the ethical and moral standards should be higher than ordinary people. In that way, other people will be more willing to be led by the leader, what's more, to admire the leader, and finally support the leader.
But should the leader maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, as the author asserts? I don't agree with it for two reasons. First, there is no exact criteria of the ethical and moral standards. It is likely that there exist the bottom line of it, but how can we measure the highest level? Who is the judger? Who has the qualifications to judge? So without an effective bar, it is difficult or even impossible to judge whether somebody has the highest ethical and moral standards. Secondly, even if there exists the measurement, it is also impossible for somebody to maintain the highest level. Common sense tells us that nobody is perfect. Everyone, no matter how great or famous he is, must have some disadvantages. Therefore, to require someone to be highest ethical and moral standards is a utopia idea.
To put it further, are highest ethical and moral standards equal to effective? Obviously not. If some one wants to be an effective leader, he or she must be eloquent to gain the supports, have foresight to make important decisions, manage to make others believe him or her and be intellective to deal with the problems. Thus, in my point of view, the character of effectiveness has the close link to the ability of solving the problems by marvelous methods. Although, the ethical and moral standards are necessary, they cannot enable the person to be effective.
Actually, the ethical and moral standards are the basic or fundamental level for a person to be accepted by the society. But if some wants to be a leader, he or she must gain other abilities as the build blockings to build the house. If he or she is ambitious to be an effective leader, maybe the excellent management or the globally communications with others can sever as the architecture who makes the house to become a skyscraper possible. |
