TOPIC: ARGUMENT127 - The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."

The author asserts that by introducing the internet monitor, the company can reduce the time waste, enhance the morale and thus increase the profits. This contention suffers from several flaws as discussed below.
Primarily, the author confuses the internet use with the waste of time. We do not know what activities the employees do in the internet, nor can we judge whether the information they search online has nothing to do with normal works. Highly possibly, it is their work that necessitates the access to the internet. Perhaps they are sending emails to costumers(consumers区分拼写!), communicating with collagues(colleagues前是EA!) about the business or seeking for important information for the job at hand. As various jobs and works may entail the use of internet, the author is too presumptuous and hasty to regard any online activity as the unwarranted waste of time.
Also, the author mistakenly assumes that the prohibition on online recreation can reduce other off-line activities as well. However, no evidence is given to verify this assumption. As no regulation is imposed to other personal activities in the office, it seems unlikely that those who idle away and indulge in off-line activities will change their habits. Further, much possibily(possibly的B后无I!), without the access to the internet, employees who used to surf online may spend more time on shopping or playing games to compensate. Thus, the author's expectation is too sanguine to be reasonable.
Further, the anticipated rise on workers' morale is more likely a naive and irrational misunderstanding on people's attitude towards the monitor. Lacking specific and in-depth study, or even a poll or survey, on employee's potential attitudes, the author has no authority to assert presumptuously that the monitor policy will win pros and contribute to a better working atmophere. Highly possibly, people may feel offended and thus deny to conform to it, spurring (+the)unsatisfaction(dissatisfaction是DIS不是UN!)and low working spirit which correspondingly result in depressed morale and lower working efficiency.
Beside, without factoring in the possible expenditure on the monitoring apparatus and the cost for corresponding changes in management, he cannot conclude that the company will gain more profits. Except the cameras and other equippment(equipment无双写!) that may give rise to a large amount of expending, perhaps extra workers will be required to regulate the monitoring machine, adding the personnel cost to the overall expenditure. Unless the author can verify that the potential increase in revenue can compensate the surging cost, his assertion lacks credibility.
In sum, the author posits his conclusion on indefensible dedcutions(deductions注意UC顺序!), rendering the argument fallacious. To amend his assertion or to come up with better proposal, he needs to conduct thorough study on the influence of the supervision and workers' attitude for it. Also, the cost should be considered as an indispensible(indispensable是A不是I!) factor. |
