TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."


Should all faculty be required to spend time working outside the academic world? The answer will be various, despite assorted effusions to the contrary, I maintain that, some majors may useful for faculty to work outside the academic world while the others may not. In addition, places too much emphases on the other field may influence education quality.

Admittedly, it is no deniable that working outside the academic world will inspire faculty many new fresh. Since through working at the other field can make their knowledge deeper and wilder. Almost everyone receive the same fundamental education, the knowledge on the books has its own limitation. The knowledge which you learn the other will also be taught. However, how can one improve oneself? Necessarily through working outside the academic world, can one know more things which they cannot learn in school, and then plus one's own attitude and conscience to the old knowledge can one differentiate oneself to the others. A good teacher should be one who has not only the knowledge on the books, but also that the old education cannot teach. Such an professor whose subject is in economic, only know the things what learn from books will result the knowledge cliche, but if has chance working outside the academic world, the situation will be much different, he/she can know more immediate information about the economical environment, and will deeper his/her understand about the old knowledge, making the knowledge much more practical.

While, there are many new majors such as those interdiscipline as education technology. Since it is a new subject, that many branches of this field have not complemented, as a construction lacking fundamental will doomed be destroyed, the most significant and urgent thing is how to develop those knowledge but not working outside the academic world. To the other extent, how those teacher who teach literature or philosophy working outside the academic world, and does it necessary for them be required working outside the academic world? Furthermore, working in the academic world can lead those faculty more concentrate on their own researches, it will also benefit for courses which they teach.

In addition, too much exposure in the world outside the academic atmosphere sometimes will damage those teachers' education quality. Since, working for the others should pay some attention on them, it will abstract teachers' enthusiasm on the own field, and do will influence the quality of teach. There are many examples that so-and-so teacher lost him/her reputation because they overlooked the quality of instruction. Such as many professors in our college that only met their students only once a year just because they are working outside the school. Thus, I have to question what the fundamental duty for a teacher? If they only pursue their value of personality but not aimed to teaching, working outside the school would be harmful.

Simply put, working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach could result in faculty's acknowledge become deeper and wider, and the most significant thing is preventing acknowledge step out the world, while as a teacher should always remember the basis obligation of them.
