Should the scholars and researches not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society and pursue their individual interests, as the speaker asserts? I agree with the statement partly. First, it is no doubt that scholars pursue their interest which will cultivate their potential. Second, some scholars' interest will hurt the society which should be restrict. Three, the research which combines the individual interest with social contribution will propel the society forward.
Admittedly, the speaker's assertation that it is significant for researches to pursue their individual interests is the stimulations for their work. The history is replete with this type of examples. The Wright brothers, for instance, who raised the curtain on the age of mechanical flight, were dreaming that human can(could) fly as the birds and trying to develop a "bird". Based on their interest, insistence and encourage, the Wright brother develop the flight which this ideas could not receive(recieve) the contemporary apprecation(appreciation) and shock all over the world eventually. An even more remarkable examples(example) is Barry J Marshall, whose discovery of Helicobater(Helicobacter) pylori revolutionized modern thought on the cause to the gastric ulcer. Identically, Barry's discovery was laughed by the contemporary scientific(scientists). Due to his interest and insistence, he studied this problem nearly 20 years and succeed to prove the Helicobater pylori causing the gastric ulcer. Eventually, he won a 2005 Nobel Prize for his discovery. Thus, when scientic(scientific) pursue his interest, he can face and solve the problems successfully.
Not with standing the foregoing benefit the great interests would bring us, we will sure to put a stop to the researches, in which the scholars' interests are undesirable to the society. For instance, some researches are keen to develop nuclear weapons which is definitely a treat to global security. This types of researches should be restricted with doubt, or it will bring out a disaster to the society. Moreover, take the drugs research for example, some researches are extremely interested in exploring new kinds of intensive drugs, but as we all know, the drugs are detrimental to human health and trigger for drug-related crimes. Without severe restriction to it, no one can envisage the consequece(consequence) of
the abuse of drugs.
Furthermore, great scientific research, correlated with personal interests and social contribution, will not only cultivate the researches' unlimited potential, but also propel the society forward. For example, Einstein Albert, a German-born American theoretical physicist whose special and general theories of relativity revolutionized modern thought on the nature of the space and time and formed a theoretical base for the exploitation of atomic energy. Einstein was interested in physics from his colledge(since university) and continually pursue this interest in his life, Eventually, he won a 1921 Nobel Prize for his explanation(explanation) of the photoelectric effect.
To sum up, the researches should pursue their own interest which make they work hard on research. However, when their research is harmful to the society, they should be restricted. |
