TOPIC: ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

In this argument, the author comes to the conclusion that all the patients diagnosed with muscle strain should be advised to take the antibiotics as part of their treatment. To justify the conclusion, the author cites that the secondary infections might keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. The author also points out a study of two groups of patients, the patients in the former group which is treated by the specialist in sports medicine take the antibiotics while the latter group cured by the general physicians take the sugar pills instead of antibiotics, the recuperation time of the former one are reduced, yet the latter one are not. Close scrutiny of this argument reveals that it is unconvincing in several aspects.

To begin with, the author unfairly assume that the patients who are suffer from the muscle strain would have the secondary infections as a necessary result. It is entirely possible that only minority of the patients would infected .For that matter, the hypothesis
of the study is totally infirm. Additionally, the author provide no information about the dissimilarities of the two groups of patients. Whether the number of the two groups are really the same? Perhaps the numbers of patients in the latter one is far more than the former one, which prolong the recuperation time of the second group significantly. Moreover, without any information about
patients, such as the age, gender, race, healthy condition and so forth, the author cannot exclude the possibility that there more young
and energetic patients
in the first group, which make their treatment time reduced parentally. Lacking information about the comparableness of the two group, the author cannot make any sound conclusion based upon the study.

In addition, even assumed that the patients in the two groups are nearly the same in statistics, the author fails to consider the difference between the two doctors. Commonsense tell us that the specialist in sports medicine are more familiar with the treatment of the muscle strain than the general physicians, which make it possible that the first groups received more skillful treatment thane the latter one. Without considering the experience of the two doctors, any implementation of the study is insufficient.

Finally, even if the treatment of the two groups are also the same, whether all the patients should be advised to take antibiotics in their treatment? It might be possible that the antibiotics can only
reduce the recuperation time of the one who suffer from the severe muscle effectively. Perhaps some patients are
allergic to the antibiotics, which would prolong the recuperation time. The author fails to exlude the other possible factors in the treatment, the conclusion seems are not wise at all.

In sum, the conclusion the author reached in this argument is invalid and misleading. To make it logically acceptable, the author should have to substantiate the two groups are comparable. I would suspend my judgment until the author provide more information about the side effect of the antibiotics and the healthy conditions of the two groups of patients.
