To get a better quality of instruction at the college and university level, we definitely need some instructors go out of academic world and work in professions relevant to what they teach, but when it comes to all faculty, I think it is impossible and infeasible. The school needs a stable environment for teaching, if teachers or professors are always thinking about how to work outside the school and how to make more money through that, the students won’t get a good instruction. And we can think of better ideas to solve this problem.

As far as I am concerned, going outside of school for some working experiences is important. On one hand, the instructors can get a relatively complete knowledge system by working in professions relevant to the courses. What they teach in school is more about theories and usually far away from practical experiences. And working out can give them a chance to study what they lack. Thus, when they come back to school, they can provide a more excellent lecture that is more informal than before. On the other hand, the experience of working outside is also good for the students who can be taught the relationship between school and society. As long as they graduate, most of them will leave their school and begin to work in society. For this reason students who have more awareness will get more chance to live through fierce competition.

However there also exist some problems if all faculty go outside. First and foremost, some instructors don’t have enough time to do that. What I mean is that it is completely infeasible. In most universities and colleges teachers or professors usually have other burden besides teaching. They may have their own task for research and managing. When you step into the room of professors you will see you have little time talking to him about yourself because he is too busy arranging for some important conferences, reading the newest papers, thinking about strategies for the experiments and so on. What’s more, if they suddenly put down all these tasks, it will be hard for a green hand to take over all these things. Thus they must use a long time teaching the next person to do all the unfinished things. After a period of working outside, when he wants to come back, everything here will seem to be unfamiliar to him. He has to spare some time learning about the change and this is really a waste of time, let alone tiring and troublesome. Second, working outside experiences does not mean a good teaching quality. Accumulating teaching experiences is also important. And we also know that long time of teaching can enrich the instructors’ lesson. In such circumstance, they’d better teach lessons continuously for a good teaching quality.

To solve this problem with a better idea, I think we should take professions and the characteristics into consideration, and the choice of working while teaching is also not bad. There is no need for some instructors to go outside who are teaching and researching basic subjects, such as physical theory, mathematics and art. If the professions are about applied chemistry and computer programming, it is advisable to work while teaching or going out of school and work for a company. In addition, different people have different tastes. Some professors love to challenge new environment and hate doing the same thing all the time, while others may face some problems if they are put in an unfamiliar field. In the movie The Shawshank Redemption, Red is a flexible prisoner with excellent ability who can get anything he wants. He has numerous cigarettes and he can even help other people get the picture of a sexy woman safely. Every other prisoner adores him. But when he comes outside of the prison, he can do nothing but only a helper in the supermarket and everyone else looks him down. Therefore it is up to the instructor whether working outside is good or not.

To sum up, it is unwise to make all faulty go out of the university or college. Though it is beneficial to improve the level of instruction, there exist some harms and infeasibility. So only after analyzing comparably can we make a decision whether or not can an instructor go outside for working.
