TOPIC: ARGUMENT12 - The following appeared in a memo from a vice president of Alta Manufacturing.
"During the past year, Alta Manufacturing had thirty percent more on-the-job accidents than nearby Panoply Industries, where the work shifts are one hour shorter than ours. Experts believe that a significant contributing factor in many on-the-job accidents is fatigue and sleep deprivation among workers. Therefore, to reduce the number of on-the-job accidents at Alta and thereby increase productivity, we should shorten each of our three work shifts by one hour so that our employees will get adequate amounts of sleep."

In the argument the vice president advocates to shorten the working hours of the shifts in order to reduce on-the-job accidents. However, the author suffers some logical fallacies which make his suggestion effectiveless and watseful.
The threshold problem is that the vice president fails to discover the difference between Panoply Industries(PI) and Alta Manufacturing(AM). The whole arguement are based on a specious comparison between PI and AM, nevertheless, there is not sufficent evidence to show that they are comparable in some degree. Maybe the two companies are of different size and the number of workers in AM are much bigger than that of PI, thus it is no surprise that more on-the-job accidents will happen in AM. Yet, they may focus on totally different fiels as AM is a coal-mining company and PI`s major business is cloth-making so that the staff in AM are under much higher risks than those in PI. Even if they are of the similar size and product, the quality of machine and the knowledge of the worker can make great contribution to the occurance of accident. It is quit possible that PI is equipped with advanced technologies which can make the production more automated so that the whole task can be done by simply press some button, not to metion there will be accidents.
In additon, the president fail to convince us that the on-the-job accdents happened in AM are caused by fatigue and sleep deprivation. There may be other deadly elements that might lead the tragedy. The company did not give enough training courses to the staff before they come to work and as a consequence, they do not know what to do under emergencies. Without rulling all these possibliteis, we can not figure out the conclution that the accident is resulted from the long working hours.
Even if the long working hours can result the fatigue and then the accidents, one can not gurantee that the workers may use the extra hour that shorten from their working hours to sleep or get some rest. They may use the time to entertain such as playing cards or watching sports. It is also much likely that this time will help them to finish more house-work. In a word, they may be even more tiredness when they come back.
In sum, before the advice gets adoptted, more evidence and imformation to prove that one-hour-longer shift will result the accidents and whether one hour more rest can ensure the staff will be more energitic.
