Morality, an inevitable and widely acceptable criterion to evaluate a person, is quite important to people. Whether the public official should maintain the highest standards of ethic and morality is a ever controversial issue, while my succinct response to the issue is that many other characters are equally, or even more, important as the morality does thus should not be neglect while the standard of ethic of a public official to some extent contribute to becoming an effective leader.
Firstly, what is the imperative and demanding character of an effective leader? From where I am standing, it is the ability himself. To be an effective leader, the officials may face many choices that relate with the sustainable and healthy development of the country, state, company, or what they supervise, the main factor of that propel the leader to make a wise judgment that congruent to the benefits of the society is a comprehensive and foreseeing analysis into the problem, what calls for the working ability and the enthusiasm to their job. Imaging how the official with the highest ethical and moral standards become an effective leader while his/her judgments and decisions are always contradict the well-being of the society. Leadership is certainly not a TV show, leaders are responsible for writing the history of tomorrow, regardless the importance of ability of a leader will consequently fraught with failure.
Secondly, besides the working ability, how the leaders co-operate with their subordinate officers is another crucial character to concern. As is known to all that mostly history is created by the mass especially in the field of politics, after a wise and prospective decision is made, whether the decision can be applied and undertaken with efficiency always occupies a irreplaceable role in the way to success, in some cases , it may be more important than the decision itself. President of the college student union as I am, while making decisions, the first question that occurs is that whether my colleagues are capable of coping with the problems, or if other alternative that can increase the efficiency. Before such considerations are taken into account, the factor whether the decision can be the wise one is still at a low priority.
However, although it is not the most important character that a effective leader should obtain, the ethical and moral standards can not be ignored as well. It is not so obviously and easily to get a thoroughly understanding about the ability of the candidate, instead the majority of the electorate judge candidates by their standards of morality. With the development of information technology, it seems not too easy to stay in the position as a public leader with relatively low standards of morality. The impeachments of President Nixon and President Clinton are both result form the scandals that reveal to the public.
All in all, under no circumstance should an effective leader neglects the importance of maintain a high level of ethical and moral standards, however, other characters including working and communicating abilities should also be put emphasis on. |
