TOPIC: ARGUMENT181 - From a letter to the editor of a city newspaper.
"One recent research study has indicated that many adolescents need more sleep than they are getting, and another study has shown that many high school students in our city are actually dissatisfied with their own academic performance. As a way of combating these problems, the high schools in our city should begin classes at 8:30 A.M. instead of 7:30 A.M., and end the school day an hour later. This arrangement will give students an extra hour of sleep in the morning, thereby making them more alert and more productive. Consequently, the students will perform better on tests and other assignments, and their academic skills will improve significantly."

In this letter, the author recommends that in our city high schools should begin classes at 8:30 AM and end the school one hour later in order to give students more sleep in the morning and make them more alert and productive in school. To support this argument, the author cites a study that many adolescents need more sleep and another that many high school students are not satisfied with their performances. This argument is flawed with several respects.
To begin with, the author unreasonably assumes that some students are not satisfied with their academic performance due to their lacking sleep at night. But the author fails to provide any evidence to justify that other reasons have nothing to do with their performance in school.Common sense tells me that one's academic performance is a function of many factors such as his diligence, intelligence and the education they get.So it is possible that those students are not satisfied with their performance because of their insufficient interest in their subjects or their lacking diligence doing schoolwork.Either is the case, the author's conclusion is unpersuasive.
The second problem is that the author hastily assumes that one hour later beginning classed will surely give the students in high school one more hour sleep without showing any reliable evidence to prove that. The action that schools begin classes at 8:30 AM and end later might result in a phenomenon that many high school students sleep one hour later at night which helps little to giving them more sleep. And some experience tells me that students are very likely to adjust their life patterns according to schools' schedule. Thus, the author's recommendation might not be practical at all .
Finally, even if that recommendation really works and most students in high school get more sleep in the morning, the author cannot easily conclude that the students will perform better on tests and other assignment, let alone their skills will improve. It is not difficult to understand that students' performance is not just decided by their sleeping time.If the other factors affecting their performance at school are not to be changed, their performance is possible to maintain what it is .
In sum, this recommendation is problematic in logical and might not be practical at all.To better evaluate this argument, the author must justify that the reason why many students are dissatisfied with their performance in school is their lacking sleep and they really need more sleep in the morning.Furthermore, providing evidence that beginning classes one hour later will surely give students more sleep will also help assess the recommendation.
