TOPIC: ARGUMENT169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.
"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."
By mak ing a comparison of the Bronston College, where professors are more pleasure when they live with their spouse in the same place, with the Pierce University. The author implied that by offering jobs to the new professors’ spouses, more gifted teachers and researchers will be attracted to our school and the morale of our all staff will improve. Although this argument seems to be evenhanded; however, extra discovery of the statement reveals that it fails to be well-reasoned and suffers several logical blemishes, for the following interpretation.
According to the studies, the speaker commits a hasty generalization: the phenomenon in Bronston can be apposite to any College of small town unconditionally. Unfortunately, speaker’s negligence of the potential differences between Bronston College and Pierce University contribute to an unfair assumption. The author has failed to consider the geographical and physical terrain of the two different areas. It is possible that the climate and the weather in Bronston College are superior to Pierce University, which attract their spouses and result in the happier mood to live together.
Nevertheless, even if the Pierce University and the Bronston College are totally same, the behavior of offering jobs to each new faculty is unacceptable. There are other various significant reasons, both individual and social, arouse the interest of the most gifted teachers and improve the morale of staff in University. For example, the appealing salary and revenue will be more practical and useful to improve the morale of the staffs. Additionally, a comfortable work place and a friendly working atmosphere will play an important role for most elite professors and researchers when they come to the choice of their occupations, which seems more significant than merely the employment of their spouse.
Finally, offering a job will lead to a negative influence rather than benefits. It will be a huge cost of our financial plan which will undoubtedly cut the cost on other parts, such as spend on education equipments, professors’ revenues and the financial aids for students. Furthermore, we even don't know whether the spouse will accept the job we offer and work in the university. In addition, it is also difficult, even impossible, to offer employment to spouse of each member. If we consider the profit, we must find the balance between the revenue and the cost. It is not sensible, although we can not find other possible method to improve our current condition.
To sum up, this inference suffers from several conspicuous flaws which logically reduce its credibility. However, rather than spend the adventurous outlay on offering the extra jobs, the president of Pierce University should consider other possible alternatives to improve the morale and attract the elite. |
