TOPIC: ARGUMENT14 - The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

The author asserts that the Green Thumb Gardening Center should expand the variety of vegetable seeds they stock for gardeners this coming spring to increase their profits. To bolster his assertion, the author cites a nation survey and the example of Great Gardens. However, careful consideration of his evidence reveals that the argument is not reliable as it stands.
First, the author points out that the magazine has been sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. However, this cannot show that the consumers like growing their own for the reason there is no data about the numbers of magazine three month before. Maybe the number has decreased for the merchant buy fewer. Without eliminating this possibility , the author's assumption can be rejected out of hand.
Second, little information about the survey can be got. In order convincing us, the author should provide us the number of the consumers who respond this survey and how it is conducted. It is entirely possible that few people take part in this survey. Given this, the author's assume cannot be taken seriously. Besides the result in national survey may not apply to the village. People in local village maybe satisfies quality of fresh vegetable in supermarket.
Third, even if the consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables,
no evidence show that they will really do it . If they do not grow by themselves, we can assert that the company cannot increase their profits by selling seeds.
In sum, the argument is incredible as it stands. To support the argument more information about the consumers is necessary. The author should give us evidence which can support the conclusion that the consumers will grow vegetables.
