Currently, as rapid development of the society, education has been considered as one of the universal human rights. What’s more, “General Education” is gradually accepted by the people all around world. Although “Interests are the best teachers” as an old proverb claims, it is not extremely responsible and sensible to assert that the education should be conducted to meet everyone’s interests. Basically, it contradicts the natural of learning and recognition and not practical to large extent.

To begin with, education should be persistent for general purpose other than for specific individuals. Admittedly, everyone has his own interests when they have grown up. However, education that is prior to human’s mature normally makes up a large majority in one person’s life and it is uncertain and irresponsible for an individual to claim his interests in the premature period. Even if the education is designed so that the interests could be met, how can we ensure the consistent interests for the future? Thus, from this point of view, the “General Education” makes sense. By studying every aspects of knowledge when we are young, we are able to distinguish what are the exact needs for us. Moreover, the more general we obtain, the more choices we would possess, thus, the more possibilities we would reach success. As for both individuals and nations, this sort of education reveals the effectiveness. This may be aptly illustrated by the education in United States. 找个人啊

In addition, education will be effective only under the combination of depth and breadth of the knowledge. Actually it involves another aspect, namely, the relationship between generazation and specialization. Assume that all the educations aim to meet individual’s interests, it seems that the education is effective that it cultivate the different kind of experts in the specialized areas according to their interests. However, the outcome may not be as effective as expected. Without generalist that has the “big picture” that related one thing to the other thing, the project or task cannot be fulfilled perfectly, which has contradicts the ideology of the effectiveness. Take Larry Page as an example, he is the co-founder of the search engine Google that has been the one of the most successful companies in the world. With the general education obtained in Stanford, plus his specialization in computer science, he becomes the 6th richest person in America. Such education is effective, it not only provides the general knowledge for each students which extends the breadth but also meets the interests of the students which specializes in an areas.

Furthermore, however, sometimes it is difficult for nations to design the education that meets every individual’s interests, the cases even severe in some developing countries especially in Africa. Suffering hungry and disease, it is ridiculous to educate students according to its needs. Therefore, the general education is an effective way to change the current situation. With the general knowledge in mind, at least the people could realize the present severity and will struggle for a better future for their countries and world. From this aspect of view, the effective education has achieved that improves the quality and competence of the populations.

In conclusion, it is irresponsible to assert that the effective education is to meet individual’s interest. Before stepping into adult, it is hard for students to determine their true interests. If the education is specified by interests, it may be a waste for the people changing their interests. In addition, more importantly, the most effective education should be the combination of general and specialized education.
