3.06Argument No.81
Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to certain stimuli. One view is that allergies can develop as the result of childhood exposure to certain irritants, such as dust or animal dander, while the immune system is not yet mature. Another view is that exposure to particular bacteria early in childhood actually triggers the proper development of the immune system, and that limiting exposure to these bacteria through excessive hygiene can cause children's immune systems to overreact to certain irritants later on. A new study supports the second view: children who are washed especially frequently and whose parents clean their homes especially frequently are more likely to develop allergies than are other children. So in order to reduce the incidence of allergies in children and adults, parents should not limit children's exposure to irritants or bacteria.
There are two views of causes of allergies, the writer claims. One is the exposure when one is a child. Another is excessive hygiene. Relying on a new study, the writer concludes that parents are supposed not to limit children's exposure to irritants or bacteria, to reduce the happening of allergies. Nevertheless, it is not convincing, for the following statements.
First, the study made a conclusion by discovering children who wash hands especially frequently and whose parents clean room especially frequently are more likely to get allergies. This situation does not necessarily mean excessive hygiene. These observed children might contact some dirty sources direct, such as bugs, soil and so forth, or even take some unclear food in. Their frequent clean up could be the result of being dirty. In that case, it is totally possible they get allergies by exposure to certain sources.
Second, even if the assumption of excessive hygiene is viable, the study also present no evidence that it is their excessive hygiene cause those children's immune systems overreact to certain irritants. Other explanations of the higher possibility of those children, like their immune system born to be weak, or sensitive to the allergies, still remain to be checked.
Third, supposing the study concludes successfully, the suggestion that parents should not limit the exposure of the irritants is among the unpersuasive ones. As excessive hygiene does not equate the limit the exposure, instead of limit the exposure, parents should only avoid excessive hygiene. While the study shows no evidence the first view is wrong, possibly, exposures to irritants can lead to allergies on the other hand. In that case, proper measures are expected to taken to avoid the irritants and bacteria.
In conclusion, to support the view the arguer holds strongly, more evidence should be exhibited, such as whether the children being observed are really in an excessive hygiene situation, the causes of those children getting allergies are the hygiene problem, and whether the first view is correct on the other hand.
