130"Howchildren are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately,we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a bettersociety."

A.科学
B.飞行员
C.律师

Gilbert Keith Chesteron, a famous British writer, once said,” Education is simply the soul of society as it passes from one generation to another.” This thought-provoking aphorism illustrates the purpose of the education—passing the soul of society which is composed of language, culture, knowledge, faith, and more. And what an individual will ultimately become depends heavily on the circumstance he is in, which is a complex network of interaction with adults, peers and so on. However, there also has been a force or a process in human history that try to bring about a better society—schooling or formal education.
Unfortunately, evidence shows that formal education is not always as beneficial as it should be. There have always been some great people who have made their names known to the world while not having been formally educated. A perfect example can be found in Abraham Lincoln whose formal education was only about 18 months of schooling. But with such little education and self-learning, he became the President of the United States who made a legacy by ending slavery. Moreover, Mark Twain, famous for his keen wit and trenchant satire, never went to traditional school but found a wide resource of knowledge in libraries which made him a famous American author. In contrast, as society has evolved into more practical world, a myriad of young people who have completed their studies couldn’t even find a job that paid well. And a number of successful businessmen who left school without a diploma claim that it is being street smart and having hands-on experience that make them survive in the current intensely competitive world.
Nevertheless, is everyone talented enough to educate themselves? Is education really not helpful to bring about a better society? Even though education is not so perfect, it surely has been playing a critical role in human history.
In a technical sense, formal education is a systematic process designed and tested by numerous predecessors in order to transmit knowledge and skills efficiently and properly. It reduces time and energy that might be largely consumed only by self-learning. Further, formal education is indispensable in fields that require specific vocational skills such as piloting, science, engineering, and law which is extremely hard to be mastered by self-learning. Francis Bacon, distinguished philosopher, scientist, lawyer, and more, was educated through medieval curriculums at a university which made him one of the most fruitful minds in the scientific and philosophical areas. In addition, while education fails to achieve the best outcome for all individuals, it has a huge impact on evolution of human minds as a whole. Without education, many aspects of knowledge would not be known to the public: Universal gravitation and the three laws of motion which have become a landmark in the physics; Mendel, together with his theory, who is regarded as “father of modern genetics”; heliocentric cosmology by Nicklaus Copernicus who have completely change the face of astronomy; the Origin of Species which introduced natural selection to the world; the philosophy stems from ancient Greece.
Formal education still has a long way to go, but the world is absolutely indebted to the contribution of numerous educators, either in the ancient or modern era.
