Education is really a hot issue people are frequently talking about. Is it appropriate for all faculty to spend time working in professions outside the academic world which are relevant to the courses they teach, as the speaker asserts? In my opinion, it is true that what the author has advocated is, to some extent, beneficial to the quality of education. However, it is hard to strike a balance between the courses they teach and the jobs outside.
To begin with, we cannot emphasize the importance of the quality in education too much. As education is what most people need to have insightful view of the world they live in. Just as one old saying goes:"it is never too old to learn", in certain aspects, receiving education is a lifetime thing to enjoy. Also "education is the number one industry of the world", said by a contemporary philosopher, has edified us to better improve the quality of education so as to develop the world.
However, the rapid development of the world around us makes knowledge renew much more frequently. The knowledge within the classes is no longer fit in with the huge changes that happen every day. What we learn on the book in the classroom may be even contrary to one result of a research newly published out. Unfortunately, teachers without the experience of working outside are unable to keep up with the rapid development, and all their have the capability to teach is merely the knowledge on the book, thus impeding the improvement of the quality in education.
On one hand, especially in the realm of engineering courses, the experiences and skills learnt from working outside makes it possible that teachers are able to have a relatively thorough study of the courses they teacher. For example, teachers in the realm of electrical engineering always give students the impression that resistant in the circuits can be ignored as they usually make little difference. Actually, when applying to the large circuits across the nation, resistant is rather huge and needs complex calculation which cannot be diminished. Without the knowledge learnt outside the course, practical issues cannot be solved and teachers are unable to teach students to have a thorough consideration of all the factors that could influence the result of the academic world.
On the other hand, The experience of working outside in the positions relevant to his specialty, whether successful or frustrating, can give the faculty as well as the students some warnings of errors made in practical conditions and advice on what the students should do when coming across difficulties. Moreover, according to the experience of working in real conditions, they can provide students with more detailed and accurate suggestion on the plan of their future careers.
Admittedly, working in the professions relevant to the courses they teach outside can give faculty and students such benefits. How to strike a proper balance between the courses and the outside jobs still remains a problem. As in some more theoretical field, such as math, physics, teachers needs more time on the study of pure theory. Another apt illustration involves the geologist, whose working places are always in the wild where rare people exist. If they all go out to work, who take the position to teach courses to the students? Therefore, a proper balance of the time consumed is really crucial.
In conclusion, working in the profession relevant to their teaching courses is, to some extent, appropriate. However, striking a proper balance between the time consumed inside and outside is more important. Anyway, I suppose Internet, which has spread to every corner of the world, is a more useful and convenient tool to get access to the practical knowledge when needed.
