TOPIC: ARGUMENT1 - The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."
The vice president recommend that they built a new in Plainsville with providing a series of factors which may contribute the advent of the profit soon. The memo about this recommendation seem to be reasonable; however, the president actually have set several assumption, which result that his advice will be unwarranted.
First thing first, the vice president hastly state that they should establish a new store in Plainsville just beacuse previous experience that the areas with a lot of people concerned with leading healthy lives had brought profit. The president assume that this phenomenene will last in other time or other area. In fact, the residents in this area make the health food and other health-related products themselves, or they can be supplied these application by the government. Moreover, what kind of health products the resident have bought have the best quality in the country so that they don't need to change them. If the president haven't render the evidence which can preclude these possibility, he cannot make a satisfied business according to past experience.
Even if the health-love people in this area indeed purchurse the health food and health-related stuff from the market, the president still hastly reckon that the sales are high merely in accordance with the report by the merchants. The merchants may tell lie and make the misleading report for the stimulation to the depressed market. Even though report has the authority and reflect the true sale scale, the president's another assumption can't be ignored, that is, he believe that the more the sales are, the more incrutive the store will be. Perhaps the cost of the manufacturing products is so high that can cater for the demand of the health-lovers. So the president should take these scnaries into to consideration in order to give a reasonable argument.
Thirdly, even if the high sales are high enough, the leader of Nature's way made an obivious assumption about the new established program for the school children.he don't offer the explict evidences from different perspetive to support the point that the program will bring new potential clients. Actually in many school, the application, apparels and food about the education program whatever the subject is related are always given by a regular company which have set up their own credit in the school. It is significantly difficult to intercept into the market for the firm school don't have acquaintance with. Without consider this possibility, the vice president cannot say these students are their future clients.
Finally, the president say that a local health club lost its business 5 years ago and at last it was closed; then he point out that the classes of weight training and aerobics are full. This two information, in my opinion make a hint that people more like receive the education of health rather than hanging around in the club in the name of health. Furthermore, perhaps it is the free food and products in the class center that absorb a sea of residents. In this situation, if the store has been set up in this area, it won't be profitable.
In summary, the president don't make a well-rouned recommendation in the memo for the lack of prudent consideration for other explanation fot evidence he offered and the assumption behind his reasoning. If the president want convince other member in the store to plan to set the the store in Plainsville, he should provide extra information such as the authentityof the report about the sale, the data which can support the last effect of his previous experience, the ture need of the new customers. |
