"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

Nowadays, we emphasize so much on their marks at school and treat those single numbers as ultimate goal of education. Skepticism---a significant sense which help better understand the theory, principles and assumptions they learn, has been seriously ignored. Therefore, I agree with the statement insofar as students are supposed to bring skepticism to certain extent towards they study.
To begin with, skepticism encourages students think carefully on the established theory, principles and laws, which will enhance at least their academic performances. Unlike passive learning, students who have a sense of skepticism usually involve themselves much more in the learning process. In order to solve doubts, they might conduct experiment, have discussions or ask questions to experts. They might also search the Internet for information or go to library in order to lend vast amount of reference books. After all the attempts, they are definitely better equipped with such knowledge than those who are just waiting for teachers' answers. Besides, the experience of debate tells us that only be being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea. By using skepticism, we take comprehensive consideration of both proposition and opposition side. Therefore, after the debate, we gain a deeper understanding of the notion.
More importantly, bringing certain skepticism inspires us to ask questions and thus helps us apply the knowledge we learn to our future career more easily. Knowledge taught at school is rigescent but not useless. When applied in certain situation, skepticism helps us to make it more suitable to contemporary society. Since theory itself is usually ideal, unpractical contents should be replaced by more practical ones. For instance, theoretically, the synthesis of ammonia will achieve high transformation rate at low temperatures. Considering the velocity is quite slow in such situation, scientists raise the temperature of reaction in a proper extent to ensure productivity. Thus, when theory is applied to practical use more flexibly, creation shows its value and the society can finally progress.
Nevertheless, undue skepticism on nearly everything is more harmful than beneficial in the process of students' growing up and searching for true knowledge. Skepticism should be based on moderate extent of questioning and verifying rather than taking every advantage to disagree everything being taught. For example, questioning on common sense like "sun rises from the east" and trying to prove its correctness by strict reasoning will only amount to futile attempts. Without recognition of basic knowledge, how can students continue to further study? Moreover, skepticism is sometimes not suitable. For children, they lack basic knowledge and their values have not established. When confronting with evil aspects such as violence or eroticism, they should obey certain instructions without any skepticism. Otherwise, serious consequences may influence their psychological health.
In all, skepticism will inspire students to study more effectively and efficiently, and it may also help them be better prepared for their future career. Moreover, skepticism also makes huge contribution to the development of society. If there was no doubt in history, we will all still believe the world is flat. But we should not take this assertion too far without knowing possible negative effects that undue skepticism brings about. Only when skepticism is used properly in certain field, it will boost the progress of our society as a whole. |
