题目:ISSUE131 - "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

The author asserts that art indicate either potential ideas or impulses of the society trough artistic accomplishments. While I wholeheartedly agree that may happen, however, in my opinion, art reflects artists' emotions and attitudes to life, but whether revealing the social ideas and impulses remain uncertain.

To begin with, artists' inspiration comes from their lives and society around them, the essence of which they attempt to convey. Reflecting the cognition, attitudes and beliefs of the artist, art always provides with us insight into personal emotions and social value, which conjure up the relevant feelings and evoke the inner resonance in the readers or listeners. In short, art integrates artists' emotions and social values, presenting us with personalities, hidden ideas and impulses.

On the one hand, some art express the artists response and indicate good or bad of the society to us. At first glance of the art work, we just receive some artistic factors and aesthetic feelings, but after further insight into it, some hidden ideas it implies will expose. When the Spanish town Guernica had been bombed by the Nazi warplanes, all the Spanish people hated Nazi, but nobody dared to speak out their anger and hatred. However, Picasso immediately drew a painting of the bombed town, which is his response to the tragic event, reflecting people's deep sorrow to the dead and hidden condemnation to the brutality of Nazi. Were it for the painting, people couldn't express their anger to the outside world. Thus art can transcend itself and disclose the hidden ideas of the society.

Moreover, some masterpieces can even be active impulses of the society and usually play significant roles in propelling the progress of us humans. Michelangelo's extraordinary sculpture Statue of David laid an emphasis on the human beings, using the Christian types and mythology, has reflected people's beautiful pursuit to the humanism and given a marvelous impulse to Renaissance. Some even wake up people’s sleeping mind and open a new era. Considering Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, which criticized the traditional marriage of men and women in 19th century, was called scandalous by the upper class. However, the public regarded it as the first feminist play in the world and an important impulse to the naturalist movement. These art

works always glitter brightly in the human history for the deeper and potential value of social problems they reflected.

On the other hand, not all the art works are relevant with social ideas and impulses. Some merely express the artists' own emotions and personalities. When hearing Bach's music, which always shows his admiration to life and devout belief in God, we feel reassured and peaceful, but gaining no social thought. When watching Van Gogh's the Starry Night, which reflects his uncertainty to his life and fantasy to the his favorite night, we find no social factors but only be fascinated with his unique spirits and personalities.

In conclusion, art is always a marriage of artist's personalities, a mirror of cognitions and an accumulation of emotions. Nonetheless, most of them reflect the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, which will shine forever.
