Students nowadays have to learn two kinds of things nowadays(删掉). One are the facts, which is considered to be many base phenomenon in different subjects like figures in mathematics, motion of some objects in physics, and historical events in history. The other one are ideas, or theories, which describe the trends or rules of facts. The controversy about which should be learned first by students has to be prudently pondered for it will influence student's learning effort. Some people insist on the importance of theories, believing that understanding theories first can greatly improve students' learning skills. I agree with them in this point, but we still have to consider other circumstances in which there are no theories and the situation in which theories are onerous the students if they do not memorize adequate facts before.开头不错~
Admittedly, remembering facts according to theories is one of the most effective methods. Since the amount of facts in many subjects is tremendous, and is growing in high speed with the discovery of much new knowledge, it is impossible for us to memorize all the facts one by one foolishly. Only through some regulations, or the theories, that we can master the essence of them, realize the relationship among them, and predict the trend of them. Take the calculation in the elementary school as an example. After learning some base calculation like one plus one is two, and one plus two is three, if a student does not understand the meaning of add calculation, he have to remember from one to billion. Hardly can he master calculation without understanding the theories of add calculation first. In contrast, according to the principles of calculation, a student is easily to understand what is add calculation, and gradually comprehend more complicate mathematics. Therefore, it is theories that greatly improving students' learn effectiveness.
However, it is not always that there are some theories summarized by our predecessors, and learning only facts does not mean a student learning little. For many subjects, especially for those subjects which on their initial periods, there are only plenty of scrappy facts for people to learn. At that time, hardly can people follow any theories to learn the new subjects for there are no theories. In my opinion, it is the summary of those facts that finally lead to the creation of a new theory, which can, on the other hand, ameliorate peoples understand of that subject. Kepler, one sedulous observer in ancient Europe, spent plenty of his time of the observation of stars in the sky, and finally discovered the well-known three principles of the motion of stars. It is not appropriate for us be say that Kepler learn little in his collection of facts.(你说例子的时候没说他是通过收集前人的数据。 反而是通过自己的观察得到的结论) Since there were not theories to follow in his periods, collecting and analyzing facts was one of the most effective approaches to understand the world. Furthermore, in the process of collecting facts, one can learn a lot, instead of little.
Also, besides the circumstance when no theories can be used, there is another situation when we have to face numerous facts before. That is the time when we begin to enter a complete new field for us. In that case, due to our scarcity of the background knowledge and their devoid of understanding of jargons in those subjects, we hardly can understand the complicate theories at that time. Simply, learning foreign languages is one typical instance. Before we have mastered some basic words, scarcely can we comprehend what is word formation, one principle that helps us to remember the words. Before we have learned some preliminary songs, hardly can we understand what is chord, one theory that indicates the construction of songs. As a tyro, only after one has remembered some basic facts of one new subjects that he can continue his study of theories.
In sum, I consent that learning theories is one resultful method to learn. However, we have to admit that sometime we have to confront plenty of facts in chaos and have to analyze them to reach a theory. Also, we have to concede that we can understand the intricate theories until we have to remember plenty of preparatory facts.
