I concede that teaching faculty's working outside school can to some extent enhance the quality of college and university teaching level. However, one should not generate too far on this problem. The fact is it does not apply to all subjects.
Primarily, it brings benefits to both the professors themselves and the college and university students. For the professors, working in professions relevant to their field of study would not only stimulate their interests in research, but also broaden their field of view and enforce them to keep pace with the latest trend in their fields. On the other hand, students can also acquire more information about how to combine the knowledge they obtained in class and put this knowledge into practice which would lay a solid foundation for their future career. To better illustrate this problem, let's take architecture design for example. As far as I am concerned, most professors teaching architecture design are encouraged to take off campus jobs instead of just doing indoor researches. By doing this, the professors can keep pace with the fashion trend in architecture design. Moreover, some professors allow students to take part in the projects which would undoubtedly provide them a good chance to gain experiences. Thus, professors' working outside academic world would do good to the teaching quality.
Nevertheless, doses that indicate that all faculty should work outside colleges as the speaker suggests? There can never be one answer to this question. As is well acknowledged, education are divided into two parts. One is to train the students to get professional skills such as medical science, computer science and architecture design mentioned above.
While the other, including physics, math, philosophy, is to train the students' ability of doing research, independent thinking and so forth. For the former one, without getting in touch with reverent professions and put the knowledge into practice, the professors' academic research on these fields might be groundless. At the same time, students would experience a gap between what they learn at school and what they do when step into the society. However, the later one requires the professors to concentrate in their indoor researches. Working on real work would do no more than distract their time and effort. Thus, not all the subjects can gain advantages by combining real work and academic research together.
Additionally, as some of the subjects are not suitable for the method mentioned above, there are may be a phenomenon in colleges and universities that professors of basic subject are unable to work outside campus and this may lead to an unfairness on financial status for them. Then, this unfairness may distress the passions of these people and bring about an unexpected result. Based on the analysis above, I strongly suggest the colleges and universities pay more attention on this problem and increase the wages of professors teaching basic subjects.
In conclusion, encouraging professors to work outside school is significant for it does bring much benefit to the instruction procedure and at the same time it may not be suitable for basic subjects. Thus, colleges and universities should emphasis the improvement of their research equipment and raise in their wages to ensure their concentration on researches.
