Argument--51
The argument presented above is not completely well-reasoned. The arguer recommends that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To support the conclusion, the arguer cites the result of a study of two groups of patients which in the first group treated by Dr. Newland and took antibiotics heals more quickly than the other group treated by Dr. Alton and took sugar pills instead of antibiotics. The conclusion sounds reasonable at the first thought, however, it is unconvincing in several aspects.
In the first place, the result of the survey upon which the argument relies is too vague to informative. The fact that patients of the first group heal more quickly than the others says little about the conclusion, since the arguer fails to present any information about the two different groups of patients. Maybe patients in the first group are much younger than patients of another, and certainly they will heal faster. And the different constitution, sex and other physiology factors of different patients are also effective. Furthermore, no evidence has been provided that the two groups of patients’ muscle injuries are at the same level. Moreover, the fact that the two groups of patients be treated by different doctors also weakens the argument. Dr. Newland with the first group is the doctor who specializes in sports medicine while Dr. Alton is a general physician, no doubt that Dr. Newland knows more about the muscle injuries and is more good at treating the problem, and not exclude the possibility that Dr. Newland has more experience and higher level.
Another problem is that by comparing the results of patients of the different groups, the arguer reasons that all the patients with muscle strain should take antibiotics. But the evidence provided in this argument is not sufficient to validate the assumption. It presented that the patients in the second group took the sugar pills, but no evidence provided that the sugar pills do not have negative effects on patients’ healing. In addition, do antibiotics suit for all the people? Some people may allergic to it ,and it also may bring some other bad effects.
In conclusion, the argument is not well reasoned. To strengthen the argument, the arguer should improve the survey that put the patients of two groups in completely same condition that being treated by the same doctor, nearly the same age, the same sex and so on, only except patients in the first group take antibiotic while the others take nothing.
