In this argument, the arguer support the hypothesis that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain based on a preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. Likewise he suggests that all patients diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. Nonetheless, the assertion, founded on the study, is far more unreliable.
In the first place, the study does not provide the severity of injuries of the patients. Considering the case that patients in the first group are mildly injured while those in the second group are severely injured, it is untrustworthy to contribute antibiotics to the recuperation of the patients.
In addition the two doctors are not at the same level. As the argument mentioned, Dr. Newland, a professional expert who specializes in the sports medicine, is obviously skillful than the general physician Dr. Alton in the field of sports injuries. Common sense tells us that treated by a professional doctor will be more likely to be cured than by a doctor who is not that skilled. Considering the difference of these two doctors, the result of the study is unfounded to support the arguer's conclusion.
Moreover, means the doctors taken to heal their patients can also render how long the recuperation time of the patients is. If patients in the first group enjoy superior medical facilities, no doubt their recuperation time can sharply decrease.
Yet the antibiotics do have the effect to severe injured patients, the suggestion, that all the patients diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics, is too arbitrary. The role antibiotics playing in treating patients may not suit those who are not severely injured and those who even don’t suffer secondary infections. If it's this case, taking antibiotics will have nothing to do with treating patients. In the meantime, taking actual situations into account, such as the case that some people may be allergic to antibiotics, it should be considerate to advise the patients to take antibiotics.
In sum, the conclusion that secondary infections surely prevent the patients from recuperation is unpersuasive and the suggestion based on the conclusion is irresponsible. If the study is single-parameter, it is to say, that the patients are similarly injured and the doctors are of the same level, the result depending on the study will be more convincing.
