TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 383          TIME: 00:55:16          DATE: 2010/3/17 20:24:19

Are any methods for attaining a worthwhile goal justifiable? The answer at most time is no. There are no absolute worthy. And even supposing they are quite worthy, if the ways to achieve the goal is not worthy, even though one manages to accomplish the goal, it is not justifiable.

To begin with, the perspective to define worthy needs second consideration. There are always a myriad of goals valuable and available for individuals. Given the limited resources and time, one can only devote himself or herself to some goals that are most worthy in a long term, leaving other choices. In this sense, accomplishing worthy goals is not all justifiable. For instance, it is worthy to spend a morning sleeping at weekends for relaxing, but it would not be justifiable if tomorrow there will be a final test, which one have not reviewed completely. Therefore, one goal might be worthy from a perspective, but it does not guarantee that it is justifiable enough for one to pursue it from other perspectives.

In addition, a goal worthy for someone may not be worthy for others. Since everyone has his or her own stand point, it is inevitable for one to set and judge objects from his or her side and thereby violent others' interests, who stand at the other side.
If the businessmen gain more profit, that means consumers would benefit less; if one wins in the competition, which also means other rivals all lose. These common situations above all demonstrate that achieving the goals seems worthy for one, but not worthy for another. In fact, there are little chance for every one win a game. Therefore, a so-called worthy goal is only worthy to some extent, and seldom justifiable for everyone.

What is more, whether we judge it is reasonable to achieve the goal is based on the value of the process, as well as the result. The two decide the final value of one goal. For instance, we will admire ordinary people, who save their own money, donate ample money to charities; but we will certainly not admire people who get money from robbery, stealing and kidnapping, send money to the poor, because the money should be return to the owners. If the methods involve crime and violence, there would be at least of less value than those do not. Therefore, the processes to achieve certain goal, as well as the goal itself, play an important role in judging the value of a goal.

Admittedly, adopting proper means to reach goals that is truly worthy and reasonable would be justifiable in the end. That is, by good intents and good ways can one be justified? In order to do that, one is expected to exam the purpose of the goal thoroughly, and assess whether the measures could be taken are worthwhile at the same time. Otherwise the objective would be diminished.

In summary, supposing the ways to reach the goal is not worthy, or from other perspective, there are other more worthy goals to accomplish, it would not be justifiable enough to attain the goal.
