Argument No.50
50: From a draft textbook manuscript submitted to a publisher.
"As Earth was being formed out of the collision of space rocks, the heat from those collisions and from the increasing gravitational energy of the planet made the entire planet molten, even the surface. Any water present would have evaporated and gone off into space.
As the planet approached its current size, however, its gravitation became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor around it as an atmosphere. Because comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases, a comet striking Earth then would have vaporized. The resulting water vapor
would have been retained in the atmosphere, eventually falling as rain on the cooled and solidified surface of Earth. Therefore, the water in Earth's oceans must have originated from comets."
In this argument, the arguer claims that water in Earth’s oceans must have came from comets. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer gives the process of the collision of space rocks and Earth, including comets striking Earth. This argument is unconvincing for several critical flaws after a careful examination.

First of all, the assumption is open to doubt that the Earth was formed out of the collision of space rocks so that Earth’s gravitation became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor around is an atmosphere after Earth approached its current size. The author does not provide any record about a comet striking Earth. If Earth was being formed before the collision of Earth, it is impossible that the water in Earth’s oceans originated from comets. Without a record shows the collision between comet and Earth, the author’s conclusion is premature at best.

Even if there is actually records can verified that the collision had happened after Earth was being formed, so the heat form those collisions and from the increasing gravitational energy of the planet made the entire planet molten even the surface. When Earth approached its current size, how high temperature the Earth’s face is? Common sense and science tells us one of the necessities of water turn to water vapor is enough high temperature. If the temperature of current Earth’s face is not enough even too low, despite comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases, it is difficulty leading to comet molten even the surface.

At last, the author fails to take into account other possible explanations for the origination of ocean water. In fact, there are many ways to bring water for Earth. For example, some chemical elements in Earth such as oxygen and hydrogen directly react in some conditions then results in water. Or the water in Earth’s ocean was come from other planets not certainly originated from comets. Thus, without statistic results show that the water in Earth’s ocean certainly came from comets, the conclusion is inconvincible.

To conclude, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it logically acceptable, the author must give relevant detail record indicates the fact that comet striking Earth was actually existed and what degree temperature, occurrence time was in current.

今天argu 写的好少~~

In this argument, the arguer claims that water in Earth’s oceans must have came(come) from comets. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer gives the process of the collision of(between) space rocks and Earth, including comets striking Earth. This argument is unconvincing for several critical flaws after a careful examination.

First of all, the assumption is open to doubt that the Earth was formed out of the collision of space rocks so that Earth’s gravitation became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor around is an atmosphere after Earth approached its current size.(感觉前一句话杂糅的太厉害) The author does not provide any record about a comet striking Earth. If Earth was being formed before the collision of Earth,(好像有错) it is impossible that the water in Earth’s oceans originated from comets. (你的意思是说要是地球在碰撞之前就形成了,彗星就不可能是地球海洋中水的来源?但似乎文中的collision指的是形成地球的space rocks的碰撞,撞地球的彗星(主要是ice)包含在内吗?)Without a record shows the collision between comet and Earth, the author’s conclusion is premature at best.

If the temperature of current Earth’s face is not enough even too low, despite comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases, it is difficulty leading to comet molten even the surface.(我觉得要是写成彗星撞击地球时产生的热量而不是地表温度似乎更好)

At last, the author fails to take into account other possible explanations for the origination of ocean water. In fact, there are many ways to bring water for Earth. For example, some chemical elements in Earth such as oxygen and hydrogen directly react in some conditions then results in water. Or the water in Earth’s ocean was come(去掉come) from other planets not certainly originated from comets.
