If a goal is worthy, then any means
taken to attain it is justifiable
According to author’s assertion, any approaches can be done as long as the goal is worthy. However, from my perspective, it is ridiculous and irresponsible to claim such an absolute viewpoint. No matter how worthy the goal is, adopting the extreme means to fulfill the goal is considered to be justifiable. On the contrary, it should be forbidden.
First of all, the definition of the word “worthy” is so subjective that it may vary from individual to individual. In the society, everyone is counteracted with others and one’s behavior may tremendously affect others. In this complicated network, even if A thinks it’s worthy, B won’t. This point could be seen from our daily experience. Similarly, the definition of worth for nations is always obscured. For example, as for the Iraq War, there are still controversial debates on it due to the different values and ideas of ethnics or nations. In addition, nowadays the Copenhagen Submit, associated with various values, is also the conference which deals with the”worth” problems. Hence, whether worthy or not is an absolute answer and it involves all sorts of responses differed among individuals and nations.
As the previously mentioned, the means must be within the framework of law even if one may think it is worthy. Put simply, imagine the following scenes: manufactures add Melamine into the milk to increase the nitrogen contents for the maximum profit, workers seek for the maximum production without taking quality into consideration and scholars resort to plagiarism for the sake of publishing papers. Of course, all the purposes are worthy for themselves, if so, what a messy society would be. Therefore, as suggested by the author, justifiable should refer that one cannot contravene the law despite the goal is extreme worthy for oneself.
In addition, perhaps some other comments should be made for “justifiable”. Sometimes we cannot judge the means is justifiable or not, namely, it has gone out of the law. For example, it is tough to differential between just and unjust for some issues like abortion, euthanasia and homosexual. Furthermore, other times we may be even incapable of judging whether it’s justifiable at the first glance. In retrospect, for some behaviors of people, we couldn’t recognize it to be reasonable and plausible until they get famous such as Edison, Calileo and Einstein. Therefore, “justifiable” is another relatively subjective word which involves with ethics somehow we shall pay attention on before the author makes such an absolute assertion.
In conclusion, any means should be conducted under the permission of law even if how worthy it is. To be sure, “worthy” is a relative concept that varies from person to person and is related with values. Furthermore, although the goal is achieved by the legal approach, whether justifiable or not might still debatable since it is also a subjective one. |
