"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
BODY:
Nowadays, the quality of instruction at college draws more and more attention of the public. As the author puts it, requiring the faculty to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to their fields of research is obviously an important way to improve the university level. However, we should also take into consideration that it is not necessary for all faculty and may possibly brings some negative affections.
(读不顺)
First of all, we should make it clear that there are two different categories of subjects, of which the purposes of education are certainly varied. One of them aims at solving the practical problems, such as engineering and architecture, and the other purely develops students’ self-cultivation, such as arts and history. As we all know, the former category of subject require student to master the skills to apply what they have learned in the university when solving problems in society. Therefore, students are urgent to get some working experience, which they have little opportunity to gain from their teachers in university unless their professors have ever worked outside. (他们的教授有工作经验就代表他们能得到?) To illustrate this point clearly, here is an example. A teacher , who is once an architecture in a company, is able to give some significant advices to the students in his lessons about how to communicate with customers and how to appeal to them, all of which make students understand the discipline better.
However, it is hasty to draw the conclusion when it comes to the other category of subject. For example, to a student majoring at arts, practical experience is not that necessary. Moreover, university can even provide them better atmosphere because of the frequently held exhibitions. Also, institutions at the college not only inform them of advanced information but also provide a chance to communicate with each other in order to obtain new theories and techniques. By the reasons above, professors of these subjects should not be required to get a job out the university.
In addition, it’s better to consider the influence before we take a further step. Firstly, we may ask whether all faculty are willing to back to the university after working outside. (可能是先有工作经验后成了教授还是一定是当了教授再出去工作获取工作经验?你默认了后一种可能…) It is quite possible that professors make a decision to stay in the job for a likely higher salary. Afterwards, the level of the university may decline without absorbing other teachers. Unfortunately, it will be a waste of time and need a large foundation. Secondly, we should also ask whether this is the best solution. Common sense tells me that inviting people who have succeeded in the society to give lectures to students can also reach the purpose.
In sum, whether or not should professors work outside depends on the measurement of the main education purpose of different disciplines. Meanwhile, affections come to a important place as well.
