Some people accused that the instruction given by teachers who have little experience working outside the academic world could not sufficiently equip students for future career challenges, thus all faculty should work in relevant professions to their courses in order to give better instruction. This perception may be contingent on subjects concerned. The practical experience brought by working in relevant professions maybe helpful in application science like engineering and management, while not so relevant to theoretical studies like philosophy and physical science. It is also noteworthy that compulsory working outside may reduce the quality of instruction teachers provide.
(It is almost necessary for teachers in certain fields to spend time working in relevant professions. Some disciplines are designed to equip students for actual application in the future. In those fields, knowledge cannot be sufficiently provided by the dull lecture in the classroom because the subjects of the course is highly related to the application in society, which is filled with complicated interaction between individuals and groups, and is developing with every passing minute. Somehow students in college may not have the chance to learn that knowledge before they actually go into specific careers, therefore teachers should take the responsibility to show some practical experience in relevant professions.
Also teachers in application science working outside academia are obviously beneficial in promoting instruction quality. First, to inform students about latest career development. For instance, teacher in computer science should know the cutting-edge evolution of the booming industry so that he or she can give students information about latest development and inspire them bring innovation to the field. Second, to show students some untaught principals and real-world examples which are no where to find in textbooks. As stated above, some knowledge about society is too complicated to be written into hundreds of pages, and what students learned from the book may be totally different from the outside world. Take myself experience as example, my professor in Organizational Theory was the former secretary-general of the national ministry of examination. His lectures in class were mainly about his actual experience in the public organization and were highly credible and precious. We learned not only theories but practice and possible incidents as well. Only by actually working in relevant professions can teachers really qualified to give correct, realistic and practical instruction to students.
However, as for physical science, history, philosophy and such, which feature analysis in a controlled environment, the necessity for teachers’ relevant working experience diminished. Equations and assumptions, archives and classics, the subject of theoretical studies is much more deadly stable than that of social science, and there are less variables and uncertainties in the scientific context than in the dynamic society as well. Look in retrospect, most great scientist and thinkers had devoted much their time in university, laboratory or research institutions rather than doing various social works, aside from those institutions, there is basically no professions “outside the academia” for physicist, philosophers and such. It is better for teachers in those fields to concentrate on their research so as to improve the quality of their instructions.
Contrary to the speaker's statement, we must be aware that teacher's working outside the academia may distract them from academic study and laboratory research and reduce the quality of their instructions, especially when the requirement becomes compulsory. Some teachers may be so interested by the profit in doing part-time jobs that they confound their major teaching task with the business and deliberately shift their energy from teaching to working outside. Some other teachers do not feel like working outside the academic world at all, which is exactly the reason they choose to teach in university. If teachers were forced to work under either precondition, it will result in the deterioration of teaching quality and detrimental effect on students. With little concentration on their research and interaction with students, professors could hardly improve their teaching qualities and make greater scientific contribution.
In sum, due to the distinct features of each discipline, it will be too arbitrary to require all faculty members to spend time working outside the academic world. Sufficient knowledge in relevant professions may be most satisfactory in application science, while not so significant in theoretical science. It should also be aware that too much compulsory working outside the university may counteract the improvement of teaching quality.
