TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

I tend to agree with that interest plays a vital role for the researchers to study, and there entirely possible some of their thoughts are unusual or idiosyncratic, but the final destination of the researches is to contribute to human beings, so under the directing of the interest, the researchers should consider the contribution to the whole society.
To begin with, the interest can benefit a lot to individuals. whoever you are, the interest is considerably crucial for one to success, like the students, employees, researchers and so forth, their most impulse to learn, work and study is the intensified tendency. To the student, if they lose the interest in learning the class then they may fail to pass the examination; to the employees, they can never gain the reward if they feel no interesting in working; to the researchers, no breakthrough is come from those who lack of the interest in studying. So, the importance of the interest is visible, and the government should never play restriction on the research, which may bring a vital discovery to the society.
In addition, it is the fact that the researchers even themselves can not ensure whether their researching can make a contribution to the society. In the most cases, the preeminent scientists start to research thoroughly because of their interest, for example, the notable astronomer Aristotle, whose major was not the astronomy, while he spent almost his whole life in studying the astronomy, and he had questioned the geocentrism, and ultimately cited the heliocentrism toppling the dominant of the geocentrism. So, without his interest, Aristotle can hardly find the truth.
Meanwhile, when we talk about the great Einstein, we can not only remember the three small chairs but also the Theory of Relativity, which transcends the current technology can involve, and it completely ascribes to the interest of him in the research. In that time, few individual can stand by the Einstein, even his students can not believe his theory because there is no credible evidence to justify his theory, and thus many scholars begin to think Einstein's thought is idiosyncratic, actually, Einstein himself cites the theory through his imagination, and because of the interest to the study, he discovers the eminent achievement, which gives a vital impelling to the physics and philosophy.
However, the researchers can not always consider their interest and neglect the safety of the whole society, along with their interest; they should take people's benefits into consideration. To those researchers who are study the viruses, they should take care of the researching, and restrict their process and when it appears the germination to harm the society, they should stop their researching otherwise they will cause catastrophe to the human kind.
In summary, the interest is the best tutor for individuals to gain their achievement, so the researchers should pursue their interests to study and try the best to make contribution to the society, when their researching are dangerous to our human beings then they should restrict their studies. |
