If someone wants to understand a society well, the author suggests him only study the major cities of the country. This assertion seems to be reasonable because big cities act as the delegations of a society to the world in its economy and technology. However, I cannot agree with this view completely for some skepticism in it, as would be deducted below.
To begin with, what must be made clear is the suitable definition of 'the characteristics of a society'. The author implies that the most important aspects of a nation lies in its big cites, which, as these cities are really seized of the nation's economy artery, leads to his conclusion. But as I consider this definition neglects some other elements of as society, and my point of this concept is that the characteristics of a nation is an aggregation primarily of its economy, technology, culture, system of organization, levels of people's life, and so forth. Big cities, especially the major cites of a nation, might only embodies the national power, the influence of which can affect the sociopolitical attitude of the whole world, since no country would despise a nation with great consortium and advanced technology of spaceship. But those characters of a major city cannot simply amount to a nation's one, for they only reflect the modern face, disregarding traditions and cultures.
The culture of a society does not only restrain itself in the current one. It rises originally from the primitive men and is succeeded down to now by thousands of generations. The Chinese scholar Liang Qichao put forward a theory in 1900 that there were four great ancient civilizations in his verse essay, The Pacific Ocean in the 20th Century. The four civilizations were ancient China, Babylon, ancient India and ancient Egypt. Take China for instance, visitors can now only widen his insight of Chinese culture neither in the national museum or by visit the small villages of minorities hidden in mountains or on the wild loess plateaus or the like, meanwhile those in those big cities buildings, living styles almost looks the same without any nation remark. Cultures, particularly those formed since ancient times, have concealed and shrink themselves due to the indifference of preservation from citizens in today's modern life.
Finally, to better understand the characteristics of a society overall, I suggest not only focus on the major urban areas, but also the rural. The understanding can be divided into two parts: the traditional section and the modern one. This division gives consideration to both faces of a society, and remedies the author’s negligence of the culture. No matter how modern a society is, no matter how short its culture has been extending, from the four great ancient culture, to America with only 227 years, what an observer need to do, as I recommend, is to get information about its history and culture evolution summary, then learn about its prominent fields such as economy or technology. To achieve a deeper understand, the people's life style and the nation's politic configuration needs more attention.
To sum up, due to analysis and reasons above, I have figured out and strengthened my idea about this assertion.
