Nowadays some people depreciate the study of history asserting that its only value lies in relevance to our daily lives. I doubt the credence of that perception because it gives vague information about what is “daily”. I am convinced that except some overly specific ones, most history studies are so related to every aspect of our lives that the value of them are immeasurable.
Admittedly some history studies do not affect contemporary people in the slightest. Discoveries like how ancient Lantianman restored food seem really distant for ordinary people in a modern society, thus can generally be considered “irrelevant”. For people who only care about the benefit of the “present” and the “future”, even history of the past century is of little practical value. Those people would rather spend their time on more substantial things like the state of the stock market now and tomorrow. The majority of people do not specialize in history so it is unnecessary for them to learn too specific historical events and changes unless they regarded history as personal interests.
However, it does not suggest that history studies irrelevant to mundane life are of little value. The disrespect for history study is depreciation of the work of historians which is of equal, if not more, importance to great discoveries in physics or biology. The universal value of any discipline is to help people understand the world. In that sense, history study is very valuable for it helps us to understand the most fundamental identity of ourselves and our circumstance. Our current values, beliefs and code of conducts were formulated during the long process of history, and historians work to explain the “present” by studying the “past”. For instance, studies on ancient sage Confucius revealed the Confucianism ethics deeply rooted in the Chinese society for thousands of years even till nowadays. On a large scale we still base out judgment of good and evil on that traditional ideology.
Secondly, history can help people to draw experience from the past and make great contribution, or at least avoid making same mistakes their precedents did. In fact, every discipline is the accumulation of historic development, i.e., everything we learned in the school or university is the history of previous works. So how can anyone possibly say that the knowledge he or she is using now in the daily life is irrelevant to history? Specifically, a study in history of scientific development can help new scientists to make full use of established theories and practice and bring about new ideas, that is—standing on the shoulder of giants. Moreover, the history of civilization is of greater significance. Contemporary generation can draw experience of success and failure of past generation so as to build a better society. Now the world is suffering from economic recession. Nations look in retrospect to the recession in early 19s and find the solution—stronger governmental interference. History gives us precious lessons to deal with new challenges.
Furthermore, general knowledge in history gives us inspirations. History helps us to know about the splendid world and heroic figures and greatly inspire our imagination. Some everlasting heroic deedsof masters were etched in history, like my idol Xu Xiake,(对照一下主语(豪言与壮举)跟举例(人物)吧,能说“我需要维生素,比如苹果”?二者不是一个等级的)(徐霞客那不是壮举么?)the first professional traveler in Chinese history who lived in Ming dynasty four hundred years ago. Xu covered many of China’s mountains and attractions with the most primal equipment while taking serious geographic records which became precious archival(archive) for later geographers. It is easy to imagine what possible dangers he might encounter to travel under such circumstance, but he accomplished his great journey out of love for nature and his country. Xu’s courage and fearless spirit has motivated me to be a professional climber, and has always encouraged me to face any obstacles in my life. Although some studies of history may seem irrelevant to our daily life, in them we can still find amusement and inspirations about the world so as to enrich our lives.
In sum, history influences us more than we could sense, it penetrates into every aspects of our life, not just daily trifles, but into our present identities, our knowledge gained from the past and our inspirations for the future. Therefore, some people may deliberately stay unaffected from the field of history, but that does not diminish the great value of history studies on the whole.
