TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Is it necessary to require all the faculties of a college or university to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to their majors in order to improve their teaching qualities, as the statement suggests? Admittedly, encouraging teachers to work in real jobs in the society would certainly improve their understanding of their professions and thus enhance their abilities of teaching. However, when necessaty necessity and feasibility of the suggestion is taken into account, I fundamentally disagree with the statement.
First and foremost, there is no denying the fact that encouraging teachers to use their knowledge or skills in real practise practice would have a positive impact on their professional and teaching skills. Firstly, using their knowledge in the real working circumstances would give them the chance to have a deeper understanding of the subject their teaching. Since most of the teachers have learnt their knowledge from school and have never had any real working experience, and therefore many of their skills are based on theories or even imaginations, it is crucial for them to modify their understandings based on real practisce. Secondly, having some experience in working in their jobs related to their majors would contribute to more complete visions of the trends and future of the professions. An illustrative example is not far to seek. Think of a teacher of micro-electronics, if he had a part-time job in a computer engineering company, he would be able to know what kind of metarialsmaterials or techniques are being applied in that field, what is the trend of the industry or what kind of research would most likely be valued. With a more sensitive awareness of the development in the field, he could not only modify his own research directions, but also instruct his students to focus on issues that are more promising. In conclusion, encouraging faculties to work outside the academic world benifits a lotwould bring much benefit.
Despite the merits of the statement, however, I disagree with the statement when considering necessaty necessity and feasibility.
Considering the necessaity of the suggestion, though I concede that there exists quite a few benifitsbenefits, it is not necessary when the following two aspects are taken into account. Firstly, some majors are connected tightly with real practicse already, imposing the suggestion would cause more waste than merit in these fields. For example, art professions such as music and painting are already teaching students how to use their skills in real life, then how could it be adapted to the suggestion made by the statement. ? Secondly, a greater emphasize on the importance of real practicse may undermine the crucial position of basic knowledge and leave the impression that only how to apply knowledge into the real world is what they have to focus on. However, we can never neglect some basic knowledge such as maths and ideology are fundamental to real practicse and the future development of the students. Therefore, the training of the basic theories and knowledge in the field and the ability to learn should always be emphasized as the most crucial part in teaching.
Considering the feasibility of the suggestion, I also find many problems even if the school really determines to carry out the suggestion. A threshold problem involves that there is no specific carrier related to every subject, and therefore it is not realistic for every teacher to find a suitable job in the society which could put their knowledge into real practicse. An example that could aptly demonstrate this point may involve subjects like philosophy, politics and mathematics. What's more, the results might be dangerous if we want to put into practicse for some other subjects. For instance, if a teacher majors in finance or politics, is it possible for him to work part-time in an investigation company or government departments? How reliable would his decisions be if he has to spare his limited time on teaching and working at the same time? Furthermore, sometimes the income of working outside may exceed the salary of teaching, and therefore the teacher might pay more attention on the job they do outside and neglect teaching.
From the analysis above, I concede that encouraging teachers to work outside brings a lot of benifits, but the suggestion should not be carried out when necessiaty and feasibility are taken into consideration. |
