ISSUE112 - "Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions."
Nowadays, educational systems overemphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking. However, while I wholeheartedly appreciate the importance of it, in my view, emotions play a crucial role in some aspects that cannot be overlooked. So education should strike a balance between them.
Admittedly, reasoning and logical thinking is the basic element of education. Our high-tech society requires us to maintain enough logic and deduction knowledge to face the challenges. Lacking of such education, a person may even have difficulties in surviving. What’s more, Students learn logic and deduction so that they can be guided by the pre-existing knowledge and make new discoveries. Considering the theory of atom, enlightened by the Rutherford atom model, Bohr added his own deduction and discovered that each atom consists of a nucleus having protons and neutrons which are encircled by electrons. Thus without the ability of reasoning and logical deducing, we cannot adapt ourselves to the society and explore discoveries based on our predecessors' conclusion.
However, having logical analysis ability doesn’t indicate that the person is capable of exploring emotions, which benefit people’s creativities and propel personal progress. As the saying goes, emotional intelligence contains an ability, capacity, or skill to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of one’s self and to act appropriately using these emotions. That is to say, a person's emotion is playing a vital role in what he or she is doing. If a person can explore and master his or her emotions well, he or she may be provided with impulse to success. For example, Bach was always replete with love to his life and admirations to God. Based on his abundant emotions, he created lots of extraordinary melody, which conjure up peace and happiness of the listeners. Thus a person’s inspiration and talent come from his inside emotional world, the essence of which he or she wants to convey. On the other hand, emotions evoke people's courage and confidence to insist on his dignity and belief. Such as Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Company, gave us the automobiles and production assembly line, which changed the course of the world. Prevailing the opposite opinions from others and always full of strength about the future, he successfully invested on the automobiles and realized his dream. In that case, if an individual have no such strong emotions to hold the dream and never give up, he or she won't realize the self-worth and achieve personal progress.
Moreover, a balance between logical thinking and emotions exploration is significant for people to succeed. Logical thinking brings about a person's cautious scrutiny of nature and science, while emotions help him or her develop his personal courage, values and spirit to reach the final success. A project conducted by the philosopher Nelson Goodman reveals that a person's own emotions should be detailed explored and studied, which will help to enhance logically thinking and creativity in the humanistic and scientific disciplines. According to the project, we can benefit more from the marriage of the two aspects of educations, that's where we should place our emphasis on.
In sum, either reasoning and logical thinking or emotions exploration is important for us to educate the students. The education of the latter is developed over recent decades, and it is not mature enough to be used in practical educational system. Therefore, the educational systems need to remind and guide the development of students’ emotional exploration, and lay stress on keeping a balance between the two aspects of education. |
