题目:ISSUE28- "Students should memorize facts only after they have studiedthe ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts.Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."
Inthe era of rapid development of technology and modernization leadingto knowledge explosion and the fast past of life, surrounding by amyriad of facts we are forced to strikea balance to memorize facts and understand ideas behind them. In response to this issue, in my view, memorizing basic facts lays afoundation of understanding them and in turn, understanding factsplays a positive role on rote learning.
Admittedly,it is vital for rote learning of some basic facts in order toappreciate the ideas behind them later. This point can be witnessed in different fields. In the realm ofmathematics, without knowing digits and axioms, advance theories suchas calculus are impossible to learn. Moreover, do we know theconcept behind digits in elementary school? In the study of foreignlanguage, due to the inner complicated and perplexed structures andthe cultural difference, the majority of us memorize alphabet andvocabulary to understand foreign language. In education, beforerecognizing value and concepts of ethicand morality, our parents are instilled some aspects of ethic andmorality in us. Without rote learning of some elemental facts, wewander in the beginning of learning process.
However, although it is rote learning that places a landmark on the road oflearning, understanding concepts behind facts is the driving force tourge us to climb the summit of the mountain of knowledge. The goal oflearning is not to learn facts by heart, but to understand ideasbehind them and criticize them. Without knowing this point, learningprocess amounts to assimilation trivia. An ample example is the dateof declaration of independence. As a foreigner, without knowing theimplication of the date, memorizing the facts is meaningless. Orconsider a more remarkable case :Student can have gone a long way tounderstand what he has learn by taking a part-time job or internshiprelated to the major of him. Understanding facts help learners tomake connection of what he has learned, and organize facts to beeasily memorized.
Lastbut not least, rote learning and understanding facts are closeconnected. Although understanding ideas and trends behind factsprovides a shortcut to the kingdom of knowledge, it does not meanthat learning ideas precedes rote learning. In our time, due toknowledge explosion and fact pact of life, we are forced to strike abalance between understanding facts and memorizing facts. On onehand, rote learning enable us to grasp the surfaceof knowledge in a short time. On the other, understandingfacts enable us to know facts' origin ,determinate factors, and characteristic limitations which arerequired in real world application.
Tosum up, this complicated issue hinges on the requirement of learning. In modern time, an optimal approach to deal with the issue is to seeka balance and take a full-sided consideration with the combination ofmemorizing facts and understanding facts. |
