Inthe era of rapid development of technology and social change leadingto the process of modernization, there is  a trend that modernizationand tradition seems to be incompatible. In response to this trend,while it is true that in some areas tradition and modernization aremutual exclusive, in most aspects, modernization is rooted intradition and embraces tradition.

Admittedly,in certain fields, tradition and modernization do not reach anagreement. Firstly, they may be incompatible in some fields such associal value. The "modern"  feminist movement is againstthe old "tradition" moral belief that women are lessimportant than men. This modern value stems from the old one andturns to reject the old one. Secondly, tradition may give ways tomodernization instead of being replaced by modernization. An ampleexample is the prime method of personal communication. With thetechnological improvement and globalization, writing letter,thetradition method of communication yields to sending E-mail, themodern method of personal interaction. Although sending E-mailbecomes a prime method of communication, writing letters does not berejected rather than by supplement of the former. Thus, while in somecases tradition and modernization are incompatible, in certainaspects they are not mutual exclusive.

Notonly are there a conflict between tradition and modernization, but infact , in most areas, modernization is rooted from tradition andaccepts tradition. Consider the case of rock and roll music which isrooted from jazz music and blue music in art. Instead of excludingjazz music and blue music due to the same musical elements to attractmusic fans, rock and roll music is coexistent with them. Maybe a morestriking example is geometry. The new"modern" non-Euclidean geometry one of whose axiom isagainst the axiom of Euclidean geometry is coexistent with the"traditional" Euclidean geometry. Instead of excluding thetraditional one, the modern geometry stems from the traditional oneand in turn embrace the traditional one in some degree. Hence,modernization and tradition can be coexistent.

Inaddition, there is a growing number of variations of modernizationthough combination of modernization and tradition.  For example themodern Chinese food adsorbs  methods of cooking in modern westernfood  by adopting its traditional  methods of cooking. A more ampleexample is kindle, a kind of ebook reader, which try to bring  thetraditional reading style and the modern digital flexibility together. These two case illustrates the combination betweentradition and modernization, which cause a variation of modernization.

Tosum up, although modernization and tradition in some cases areincompatible, they in most extent are coexistent and the former isrooted in the latter. Moreover, the combination of modernization andtradition causes a variation of modernization.
