题目:ISSUE147- "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choosebetween them."
In the era of rapid development of technology and social change leading to the process of modernization, there is a trend that modernization and tradition seems to be incompatible. In response to this trend, while it is true that in some areas tradition and modernization are mutual exclusive, in most aspects, modernization is rooted in tradition and embraces tradition.
Admittedly, in certain fields, tradition and modernization do not reach an agreement. Firstly, they may be incompatible in some fields such as social value. The "modern" feminist movement is against the old "tradition" moral belief that women are less important than men. This modern value stems from the old one and turns to reject the old one. Secondly, tradition may give ways to modernization instead of being replaced by modernization. An ample example is the prime method of personal communication. With the technological improvement and globalization, writing letter, the tradition method of communication yields to sending E-mail, the modern method of personal interaction. Although sending E-mail becomes a prime method of communication, writing letters does not be rejected rather than by supplement of the former. (可以改成:writing letters is a supplement to the former rather than being rejected.)Thus, while in some cases tradition and modernization are incompatible, in certain aspects they are not mutual exclusive.
Not only are there a conflict between tradition and modernization, but(not only…, but also…句型没用好) in fact , in most areas, modernization is rooted from tradition and accepts tradition. Consider the case of rock and roll music which is rooted from jazz music and blue music in art. Instead of excluding jazz music and blue music due to the same musical elements to attract music fans, rock and roll music is coexistent with them. Maybe a more striking example is geometry. The new "modern" non-Euclidean geometry one of whose axiom(没明白什么意思,这个whose指的是?)is against the axiom of Euclidean geometry is coexistent with the "traditional" Euclidean geometry. Instead of excluding the traditional one, the modern geometry stems from the traditional one and in turn embrace the traditional one in some degree. Hence, modernization and tradition can be coexistent.(例子都貌似挺好的,但是没阐释清楚,比如R&B是从Jazz and blue music中起源的,但如何coexistent没说清楚,你至少可能得提一下,三者都比较流行,没有哪种音乐风格是弱势或者消失不见了,感觉一个coexistent在气势和说服力上有点儿弱;至于非欧几里得几何学与欧几里得几何学的例子,个人觉得也是同样的问题,你能把一个例子将得白痴都懂了,可能Issue能力就出神入化了,何况并不是所有人都明白二者之间的关系,仅从字面上理解的话也还是不太能够说明问题,个人认为哈!)
In addition, there is a growing number of variations of modernization though combination of modernization and tradition. For example the modern Chinese food adsorbs methods of cooking in modern western food by adopting its traditional methods of cooking. A more ample example is kindle(专有名词大写), a kind of e-book reader, which try to bring the traditional reading style and the modern digital flexibility together. These two case(cases) illustrates the combination between tradition and modernization, which cause a variation of modernization.
To sum up, although modernization and tradition in some cases are incompatible, they in most extent are coexistent and the former is rooted in the latter. Moreover, the combination of modernization and tradition causes a variation of modernization. |
