The movie Terminator give us a shock for the fear that machines may someday wield the world of human beings since they are stronger and wiser to some extent than men. Luckily, this worry seems to be unnecessary. After all, machines are designed by human minds to accomplish certain tasks. We should admit that machines can do better in some field. However, the superioty of human minds should not be ignored as well.

Some anthropologists advocate that it is the ability of using tools that distinguish human beings from other animal species. Machines, as a remarkable representative of tools, increase our self-confidence as a wiser species on the earth. Since the Industrial Revolution, James Watt improved the efficiency of adapting stream machines and humans entered a new era. Texture works who want to improve their work efficiency designed machines to substitute hand-made cloth. Farmers who got tired of ploughing by themselves designed automatic plough machines. Travelers who wish to enjoy a faster speed designed trains and planes. Scientists who were interested in astronomy designed spaceships. In short, all the machines are designed to satisfy human's needs of emancipate themselves from tiresome works. They are essentially serving the same purpose as any prehistoric tools such as stone axes and wooden lances.

Since human beings have limited abilities in strength, accuracy and other aspects, relevant machines are developed to cover the shortcomings. For example, the crane is developed to overcome the limitation in men's strength. Using a crane, a worker can easily hoist tons of irons or stones and deliver them to appointed places. However, in the ancient times when there were no machines, thousands of workers had to take longer time and work all-out to carry the needed materials to the building places. Or in the calculation field, machines do better than human beings. Thanks to the computers and super calculators, we can accomplish a complicated calculation problem in a few minutes or less. Without these machines, it would be the toughest and most time-consuming work in the world and we may seldom reach accurate answers. In such period, although machines themselves are initially developed by human minds, they are definitely superior to human minds in finishing the tasks we appoint.

However, machines are not superior in all the areas. Certain fields still need human minds more. The analytical writing and critical thinking are best examples to illustrate this point. No matter how well the computer is designed, it can never "write" a lively novel as the Gone with Winds. No matter how complicated the printing machines are, they can never replace thousands of editors in the world who observe news and critically analyzing the news. No matter how artificial the machines are, they can never design themselves without human minds. It is the human minds that continuously improve the innovation of machines and meet our psychological needs.

In sum, even if the machines are well-designed and own great capacity, we should not be confused they are eventually the tools we human beings use to satisfy our desires. Without human minds, the machines alone cannot obtain the powers to reach anything, or, they themselves would not even exist at all. Rather than accolade the power of machines, it is better to appreciate our great minds and to designer better machines to make our life better.
