Issue 40 "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
I really concede that we should just a scholar or a researcher not only by their contribution to the larger society but also their efforts to seek for individual interests. However, the possible side effects brought by the idiosyncratic interests need, to some extent, to be taken into consideration.
Admittedly, interests are best teachers to anybody, in terms of researching in certain fields. Taking a look at the story of Otto Lilienthal, who took felicity to observe how the birds fly and how do they land on the earth when he was still a child, we may realise that it is his interesting in birds that is responsible to his later well known as the Glider King. In addition, a great deal of researches, lacking money, time, or appropriate technology and environment, are not able to draw a conclusion in a short-term. In this case, researchers may possibly give up if people focus their attentions only on the results. Then their deeply interests on it seem to be the only impulse to hold on to the research.
Nevertheless, when we say the significance of the individual interests, it is unwise to ignore the limited factors, such as personal responsibility and social morality. For example, cloning, known to us that have brought us splendid benefits in medicine, agriculture, and biology, unaviodably, causes problems in traditional ethics. Nowadays, lots of researchers have concentrated on human cloning, which is morally and ethically unacceptable due to its devalue of human life. Without the effective polity of the government to limit its development, nobody can guarantee that more problems won't arise as long as there are sufficient researchers who are interesting in human cloning.
Furthermore, such researches as above, which need a long-term study to gain a result, often play an important role in the waste of foundation that may otherwise be used on some other more important studies. In this sense, with so many problems, such as unemployment, violence, and pollution, to solve immediately, money spent on research is not always a good investment, especially when the results are controversial and unclear. Blind or excessive devotion to something is not a good choice for a professional scholar without deliberate analysis.
Therefore, as a scholar or a researcher of the society, it is necessary to be in possession of public virtue and professional ethics. They should not only make efforts to realise their dreams under their idiosyncratic individual interests, but also take consideration of its influence to their society, especially when negative side effects are possible. For instance, public attention was ever drawn to reported abuses of human subjects in biomedical experiments which spent a lot of foundation, especially during the Second World War. Unfortunately, although the scientists and physics who had taken biomedical experiments on concentration camp prisoners were finally judged guilty in trials, it had already leave a deep shadow in the sole of the common that cannot be dispelled.
In sum, insofar as I can see, a researcher should try his best to pursue his individual interests, only when they are ready to take responsibility to his society and the masses. They should think about the evaluation of them in the future, rather than pay attention on the appreciation or criticism of them at the moment.
argu 238
Without careful examination about the argument, the conclusion that it is necessary for Mira Vista College to offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors seems reasonable. Unfortunately, close scrutiny proves it unconvincing because of unwarranted assumptions and the dissimilarities between Green Mountain College and Mira Vista College.
First at all, the asserting that graduates from Mira Vista College have more difficulties in seeking employment than those from Green Mountain College appears to be unfounded. First, whether all of the graduates informed the placement office is open to doubt. If only a small portion responded them, then we can not be convinced that those graduates represent all of the students; what's more, perhaps students who didn't informed the office succeeded in the employment. Second, only graduates who get full-time jobs are involved. It is possible that there are more students who just get half-time jobs; however, the arguer fails to clear the exact number of those students. Third, the arguer also ignored the possible cases that many students may finally get a job for more than three months.
In addition, the argument is based on the assumption that more business courses and more job counselors lead to the employment success in Green Mountain College. However, the arguer fails to consider the inherence differences between the two colleges, such as the different courses, reputation, and qualities of students. Perhaps students in Green Mountain College major in the subjects, which are popular in the current, or perhaps the college has a better reputation. Without ruling out these possible cases, the analysis of the argument is unreliable; Hence, there is no guarantee that business courses and job counselors will just work as well in Mira Vista College
Finally, even if it is the business courses and counselors that contribute to finding a job, although has no foundation, it is hasty to draw the conclusion. Firstly, there is no evidence to support that we should offer more cases in computer technology. Secondly, hiring additional job counselors may be a waste of money, and therefore influence the quality of the instruction. Thirdly, there are several major factors that are helpful to find a job other than what the argument contains, such as the improvement of the students level, and the instruction of the employment trend.
In sum, we can say that the reasons used to support the conclusion can not be relied on. To solidify the argument, the arguer would have to provide more information about the two colleges and evidence that demonstrate the significance of business courses and job counselors. Before any actions are taken, a further study is needed.
