17"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
I strongly disagree with the speaker's claims. Laws, though they are differed from one country to another, all are enacted to keep the peace and stable of society of the country and secure their civilian's rights of living with happiness and harmony. So I think any individual in a certain society has a responsibility to obey all the laws have been enacted in their country.
First, the differences between the so called "just" and "unjust" laws are very vague. How can we distinguish the “just” and “unjust” laws from each other? Or what is the exactly definition of “just” or “unjust”? I believe no one can give a convincing and general accepted answer to the two questions mentioned above. Because the "just" and "unjust" are merely a kind of human subjective feelings, which is different or even ambivalent from one individual to another. In short, there is not a definite criterion that can be consulted when dividing the laws into two types as the speaker suggests. So it is impossible for us to take further actions according to the unfeasible premise, the speaker’s first claim. In other words, the speaker's claims are self-contradiction.
Second, if following the suggestion involved in the speaker's second claim, that every of us should disobey and resist unjust laws, we will be entangled into great troubles or even wars within nations. The speaker arouses all the people in a certain country should express their differences about law directly. According to the speaker's assertion, those who pray to a certain god have the right to ask the government in their country to emend the laws about religion. From the prospects of these followers of religion, it is the just laws that that requesting all the native people respect or had better embrace their religion. Further, if the government does not do as their wishes, the followers have a duty to disobey the laws and fight against the government violence, till making the "unjust" laws "just". On the other hand, if the government satisfies their wishes, according to the speaker’s assertion, the other group of followers who pray to a different god should disobey and resist the laws. How absurd it is. The result of the actions of these followers must be that all the laws, no matter “just” or “unjust”, become inefficacy. And eventually, society become chaos, and the civilians are suffering from endless conflicts between religions at the same time.
Admittedly, the laws of our society are flawed in some aspects, but what we should do is trying our best to develop the laws and the legal system through a more reasonable and more attainable way. We can express our ideas about any laws peacefully to our government of our country, like writing letters or making a call to the relative departments. And before the government makes an appropriate decision according to the collected ideas of the civilians, what we should do is keeping the stable of the society, which is obeying the current laws. Only by doing like this, our wishes to live in a better life can be achieved with the progress of the laws of our society.
In sum, what i promote is that we should spare no effort to emend and perfect the laws of our society for our more happiness life in the future. And its first step is obeying, rather than disobeying or even resisting, all of the existing laws.
