With the rapid development of this era and the faster and faster pace of the society, people universally attempt to be more competitive to take advantage of this world. While it is true that each coin has two sides, which means competition can be both positive and negative, from my perspective, competition is more beneficial than detrimental to a society. There is no doubt
that perfection and improvement can derive from competition. In addition, competition is a good way to prevent corruption and undemocratic situations. What's more, it is in competition that we learn to cooperate better.
Where there is competition, there is virtue. The remarks highlights the point that competition can urge people to perfect and improve themselves in every aspects. Take the example of merchants. Since the whole society is achieving material affluence, customers have a variety
of choices when deciding which brand of product to buy. To augment the market share and make more money, the businessmen automatically come up with many ways to improve the quality of products and service, hence improving the productivity of the whole society, which is no doubt a significant progress for human beings. This case is applicable to the job market. The potential employees want to get a great job, so they improve themselves to compete with others. All these struggle make them more capable and strong-minded.
Turning to the field of politics, competition is a good way to prevent corruption and undemocratic state. Under the control of an autocratic power, there is no competition at all, and no challenges to the authority is allowed. In this way, corruption and lack of democracy are coming out. Soviet Union, North Korea, or even China are good examples of this. Corruption and undemocratic state are shameful for a modern society. Worse still, citizens will suffer after the overturn of a regime, because the procedure is always with chaos and unrest.
Besides, paradoxical it may seem to be, it is in competition that we learn to cooperate better. Common sense tells us that competition is more of an antagonistic form and cooperation appeals to be harmonious. However, when we are against of others in pursuit of something, we little by little get to know that a person is limited, and many tasks or goals cannot be achieved by only one person. One begins to realize the importance to cooperate with others. Furthermore, he will learn from contradictory ideas to view issues from a different dimension, thus making himself more competitive than ever.
In conclusion, the benefits of competition clearly outweigh the harm of it. There is no doubt that competition can result in unhappy collisions, mental depression after being defeated or a stressful life. Nevertheless, no one can deny that competition plays a critical role in shaping the modern society in urging people to perfect and improve themselves, preventing corruption and undemocratic situations and informing us the importance of cooperation. Besides, the consciousness of being competitive may ignite the diligence inside a person, on which he can rely when meeting difficulties and frustration. A man, a society, a nation will not be great if it lacks the consciousness of competition. |
