"The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
'In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environment problems in Clearview will certainly be solved.'"
This letter recommends to vote Ann Green, a member of the Good Earth Coalition, by the increasing statistics of factories and patients with respiratory illnesses of last year. However, the recommendation relies on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, which render it unconvincing as it stands.
The increasing number of factories is not an evidence of Frank Braun's careless of environmental protection. The arguer neglect to take the economy background into account, which is possible to be the direct reason for increasing factories. Moreover, double number of factories is not directly related to the increased air pollution levels. The statement doesn't show us the climate, rainfall, and vegetation of Clearview, which are also contribute to the prevention of air pollution. Additionally, 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses might be due to neither the increasing of factories nor air pollution. Respiratory illnesses are common disease that can be infected by many activities. As we can achieve from the state, that factory increasing often goes with economy growth. The citizens in Clearview might took part in more commercial activities and that might be pose more respiratory illnesses spreading.
On the other hand, the claim of the problem of pollution will be solved by electing Ann Green lacks of evidence. According to the arguer, Ann Green is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, but whether the coalition is local or national is not mentioned. So Ann Green may be less familiar with the circumstance of Clearview than Frank Braun, who is the member of local council. It may be counterproductive to elect someone, who doesn't know the situation around, as the mayor. The arguer doesn't provide the evidence about the increasing factories is due to Clearview town council. Admittedly, to build a factory concerns many institutions and departments, thus we can hardly conclude the increasing of factories is simply bred by the Clearview town council, or by a single person.
Overall, the reasoning about elect Ann Green rather than Frank Braun in order to prevent air pollution and respiratory illnesses as presented above is less convincing. The citizens and officials of Clearview should evaluate all possible aspects and causes for the increasing levels of air pollution before elect. |
