TOPIC: ARGUMENT154 - The following appeared in the editorial section of a health and fitness magazine.
"In a study of the effects of exercise on longevity, medical researchers tracked 500 middle-aged men over a 20-year period. The subjects represented a variety of occupations in several different parts of the country and responded to an annual survey in which they were asked: How often and how strenuously do you exercise? Of those who responded, the men who reported that they engaged in vigorous outdoor exercise nearly every day lived longer than the men who reported that they exercised mildly only once or twice a week. Given the clear link that this study establishes between longevity and exercise, doctors should not recommend moderate exercise to their patients but should instead encourage vigorous outdoor exercise on a daily basis."

The article may seem convincing at first, but there are still some logical fallacies, some of which I would point out as below.
To begin with, the study does not reveal the health conditions of 500 men, which is of vital importance for the longevity. As is known to all, health in middle-aged contributes significantly to the physical conditions later in life. Supposing a man who always gets sick at his forties, then how could he be healthier than others who are healthier at that time in his sixties? Also, those who are not healthy may take fewer exercises than others, which completed fit the result of the study. As the study fails to mention this crucial information, if not to omit purposely, the outcomes would not be that convincing.
In addition, even assuming 500 men are all at the same physical conditions, it might also be their health consciousness or health habits who take exercises more regularly that lead to the longevity. People who exercise regularly might either love sports or concern about healthy lifestyle. For those who like sports, they are more likely to exercise from when they are children or teenagers. Thus, long time exercising makes one healthier than others who do not. Others who care about their health and exercise for purpose, are inclined to live healthy lives, including having healthy food. Obviously, their longevity is highly possible. Therefore, those who take exercises regularly may benefit from their healthy lifestyles, instead of exercising regularly.
Finally, even supposing the establishment between longevity and exercise, patients are not supposed to take vigorous outdoor exercise daily. Patients are the ones who recover from recent disease. They are usually weaker than normal people and need more time to rest than to exercise. Taking vigorous outdoor exercise, which costs a large amount of energy, might not be good for their recoveries, let along the possibilities of triggering the diseases again for being fatigue.
To conclude, although the author base on a seemingly convincing study, there are still fallacies which lead his suggestions not viable. People in the study might have different conditions, the reasons for their longevity might be their health consciousness, and patients are not supposed to exercise regularly based on their conditions.
