The hypothesis that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain sounds reasonable at first glance. To support this, the author cites the preliminary results of a study. However, there are several questionable/weak and unconvincing statements in the argument.

First of all, as the author mentioned in the argument, there are two groups of patients in order to support his/her hypothesis. However, those two groups are not specified in details. For instance, if the patients in test group are young people on their working holiday and their counterparts in control group are some elders with much severer muscle strain, who receive medical treatment while working, obviously the recuperation time of the first group will be much shorter than the second one. Moreover, different doctors may also lead to an unreliable result. A doctor who specializes in sports medicine could make a more reasonable rehabilitation program for his/her patients than a general physician, which may help the patients in the test group restore their health greatly. The most arguable thing is that the author hasn’t mentioned the number of patients he/she chose in each group because too few subjects in the study, such as one patient in each group, is not enough to make sense. Thus, the preliminary results can’t illustrate that antibiotics can help patients healing quickly after muscle strain.


Secondly, not all the patients can take antibiotics as part of their treatment after severe muscle strain because some people are allergic to it. Last winter, A old lady called Shuxiang Liu in Jilin province got a cold, and had a shot of penicillin without skin test, it was ultimately proved that Liu was fatal allergic to penicillin, how sorrowful it is! This tragedy surly can be avoided originally, which was totally ignored by the doctor in Liu’s treatment.



All in all, only after re-designing the experiment carefully might it come up with a convincing result in whether secondary infections would extend the recuperation time of some patients after severe muscle strain.
