169.The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to
the president of Pierce University.
"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a
small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living
in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic
area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers
and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire
staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of
each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to
be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in
this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a
chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our
offers."
In this augument ,the arguer claims that if the president of pierce University has given opptunities of enployment
to those new professors' spouses ,those new professors will accept our offers. To support the conclusion ,the arguer has listed some evidences that some studies made by Bronston College expounds that both male and female professors prefer to live in small town when their spouses also work in same area. This analysis is fraught with some
flaws.
In the first place ,to provide employment to those new professors' spouses does't indicate those professors would accept the offers .Because the spouse's employment might not be the most improtant factor to the professor to choose which college to go ,although spouse's job is also vital.Obviously, the college's background and working environment are more important .For instance ,if a young promising professor just go to an ordinary college which doesn't have good experiment conditions, and enough academic atmosphere to work for a life time ,just for his or her wife also has a job in this college .Does he prefer to work ?Probably not.So working condition is quite pivotal.
In the second place ,the studies in the Bronston College are not convincing enough. The situation of that college which located in small town ,can not represent the whole situation of Pierce University. After all ,they are located different places ,and don't have same academic background .The new professors in college might not refleck the real chioses of professors in university ,who would face more pressure and challenges .So the professors in university may would like to choose the more promising job which could be good for their development of career in the future.
In sum ,the author falls to give us certain information about what the real preferance or predisposition for jobs of those new professors and their demand about college. To strengthen the point ,arguer should give us more data of studies .
