TOPIC: ISSUE1 - "We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."
Do people learn more from the ones whose views that we share than from people whose opinions that we do not agree with? The speaker asserts so,since disgreement can cause tension and prohibit people from learning.I concede that it is a good means to learn from the persons who have the identical idea with ourselves. However,I do believe that disagreement is not necessarily causing conflict between people.
Admittedly,it is easier for people to accept the ideas which are the same to our own,or rather, people are more likely to accept the ideas in a harmonious environment.Obviously,we human kind are social creatures, nothing is more important for us than being a part of a whole community.Agreement is the very signal which makes us integrete the whole community, agreement is also the siginal which infers our group identity.
One famous experiment held in the U.S.A several decades ago, which is deviding a class into two groups randomly.Students in one group were told that they are
smarter than the students in another group and received encouragement and praise whatever they did. When they grew up,these students who always receive positive signals perform much better than their conterparts who donot receive any positive encouragement.
However, disagreement is not invariably causing stress and undermine the learning, especially when the opposite opinions are not proposed in a hostile way.For example, debate, which is favored by many intellectuals and college students, can make people who involved learn much more.Traditionally,we learn things just
from certain pespectives, which limited our sight and view, while debate can give people information from all perspectives, making people not only know about the positive aspects of the thing, but also the negative aspects and giving people comprehensive information.
Another reason why disagreement is not necessarily undermine the learning is that different people have divergent characters. Some people can treat the disagreement in a very positive way since they know that the one who hold the opposite opinion just wants to improve the situation or enhance the
well-being for all.
If people always receive agreements,it is also detrimental to establish a healthy charactor.Namely, people are getting used to the agreement,ao they think that they can always make the best dicisions, resulting in arbitary charactor.
To conclude, agreement and disagreement can both benefit the people in terms of learning. If a person has a healthy mental psycology and treat disagreement in a correct way, they can also learn well.
TOPIC: ARGUMENT4 - The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.
"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town-Adams Realty and Fitch Realty-Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams."
This argument,well-presented as it may seem, after being seriously contemplating, yet it is not well-reasoned.The reasons are listed in the following paragraphs.
First and foremost, the arguer's assertion that Adams Realty is clearly superior
relies on the fact that Adam has 40 agents while Fitch has only 25.However,the arguer provides no evidence that the more the agents, the better the firm.It is entirely possible that the 40 agents of Adam are all small agents while the 25 agents of Fitch are all big ones.Or perhaps each of the 20 agents is perform better than each of the agents in Fitch.Without considering and ruling out other potential possibilities, the arguer can not draw any defensible conclusion.
Secondly, the arguer's conclusion also rests on the assumption that the more the revenue, the better the firm. However, there exists other explainations. For example, what's the expense of each firm?It is known to all that the profit not only relies on the revenue, but also depends on the expense.Without further information, the arguer's conclusion is unjustifiable and imprudent.
Thirdly, the arguer claims that the Adams sells faster based on the fact that ten year's ago,it took more than four months to sell a house by Fitch while it just took one month ten years later by Adams. However, there are some other factors which can contribute to this.Perhaps, ten years ago,the house is difficult to sell irrespective of the firm.Or perhaps, the house ten years ago in a very unconvinient community while the home ten years later locates in a convinient place where the transportation is very advanced.Without ruling out the other scenarios, the arguer can not convince me.
To conclude, the arguer's conclusion rests on a series of unsubstantiated and indefensible evidences, which render it unjustifiable and imprudent as it stands.More detailed evidence and substantiated information should be collected to draw a much better conclusion. |
