Issue 40 Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic these interests may seem.
Nowadays, we are benefited greatly from the countless rewarding scientific researches: our society is developed greatly and our life could be no more convenient than each of the era before. But there are some studies which do not seem to be so attractive and helpful to us. And recently some argue that scholars and researchers should concern that their work makes a contribution to the larger society. However, in my mind, it is more significant for them to pursue their individual interests, on the premise of having no evil purpose.
As we all know, scientific researches are a process of exploring the unknown nature, thus, it would be very hard to judge which one of them would bring more benefits to our human being. If a priority must be taken, then who would make the choice is still a big question: the government or the mass? Admittedly, any one of us could not be objective and predict the results of the decision. Moreover, a number deal of beneficial works is byproduct of the process of researching. Alexander Fleming who discovered the famous antibiotic medicine-penicillin actually did a more plain research without any purpose of producing the antibiotic medicines. He found this profound medicine because of an accident. Then, a even usual research give us the most favorable results, so it is difficult to tell which research contribute to the larger society.
Moreover, interests do play a vital role in the development of scientific researches for they serve as a huge impetus for researchers. Scholars who have plentiful interests on their studies would definitely work with more passion, and devotion. Thus, more significant achievements may come to the reality. Copernicus who was studying in the medicine at first became interested in the astronomy about which he contacted with a little knowledge later. With a great deal of interests, he worked very hard, and finally brought out the profound idea- the heliocentric theory. Hence, it is impossible to deny the crucial effect of the interests.
However, to let scientists do whatever they prefer to do would be wrong. Researchers who possess an evil purpose and might do harmful researches to the society should be restrained by morality and laws. Take the clone technology for example. If the scientists who likely to clone a human without any parent realize his position without any limitation, then it would be a disaster: our ethic would be trapped in a totally disorder situation where would be no more families or even a nation. In short, appropriate restrictions to regulate the researches are needed.
A free atmosphere providing a right for the scientists to carry out their works according to the interests is important in which they can work with more impetus and may contribute more to the society. Nevertheless, we should not overlook some researchers' immoral mind and the harmful results they could bring to us. |
