Issue 8

It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public.

花了2个小时 完全否定 写完才想起来国家研制原子弹这些信息是不能透露的 ....

I can’t agree the claim that political leader has the privilege to hide information, and I strongly believe it is indisputable principle that in any event, public has the right to learn the truth. I concedein many cases, withholding information is out of kindness, but any attempt to hide information from the public could eventually weaken people’ belief in the government and such a theory would freeze our social progress.

First of all, every people enjoy same right whether he or she is a political leader or a civilian. If the principle is broken, social justice and democracy will be undermined. Since no clear standard indicates what should be withheld and what shouldn’t, once these leaders began to hide information, they would use this method once and onceagain to benefit themselves. It is quite possible that they would sift any information harmful to themselves thus without public opinion’ restriction the government would become a dictatorship finally. To eliminate the possibility,we must limit this kind of power of the leaders which could threaten our justice and democracy.

Moreover, the speaker overlooks the fact that probably opening information is a better way to solve problem rather than concealing it. Supposing a city with an increase crime rate which bothers the mayor, there are two choices for him now that withholding the fact or letting everybody know that. Just covering the fact wouldn’t be helpful to improve the public security. In contrast, if everyone is aware of the serious problem, residents will be more careful and companies will enhance their security while public are more likely to give various recommends including providing suspects’ information or pointing out the most dangerous area in the city or proposing somegood ways to reduce crime any of which could benefit the security condition. Then this is the reason why it is unnecessary for political leaders to withhold information.

But under some extreme circumstances, it seems like reasonable that blocking bad news could benefit social stability. However, history tells us that hiding information is likely to be a short-sighted way and would easily trigger more serious problem. For example, In 1960s China, there was an extraordinary serious famine which affected millions people. At the beginning, to avert possible panic, local government made a plausible decision that concealing the death number. But as time went by, more people became the famine’s victims since both people and central government underestimated the extent of the disaster and thereby they did not prepare enough relief food.Obviously, hiding information was responsible for the tragedy which should have been alleviated if the government opened the information from the beginning.

Finally, withholding information is more difficult now since people have far more various means to acquire information than they had before. Besides traditional mediums such as newspaper and television, more and more new mediums have become to play significant roles in our daily life and Twitter is the best paragon among them. As we know, Iran people succeed in broadcasting their protesting to the government throughout the world by Twitter last year even though the political leaders made every effect to block the information. Today, with so many ways to get information, it is ridiculous and doomed to withhold information from public.

In sum, there is no need to withhold information for the political leaders. Publics’ wisdom and judgment should not be underrated. Communication with publics could help the government find the solution as soon as possible. What’s more, hiding information would risk social justice and democracy which are the basis of social advance. Meanwhile, withholding information seems to be fruitless since people can get information by other ways now. In each respect, it is undesirable for political leaders to withhold information from the public.
