208 "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

人们的眼神、穿着和动作都揭示了他们的态度和兴趣。你可以透过观察一个社会中人们的外貌和举止来认识该社会的理念和价值观。

The speaker asserts that how people look, dress and act reveals their attitudes and interests and their society's ideas and values. As far as I see, the appearance and behavior of people definitely exhibit their attitudes and values. However, the assertion wrongly considers society's diversity to the extent that the reflection of appearance is on a case-to-case basis.

Turning first to the assertion that the way people look, dress and act reveals their attitudes and interests. People's outward appearances are frequently determined by their own interests, which mean that they can make the decision all by themselves. To witness the connection between people's appearance and their attitudes, one need look no further than the singers on stage, whether in a concert or in a TV show, where their performance dresses can present the music genre that they belong to. Consistently, the one with formal suit is considered to be a classic singer; to the contrary, the one who is in vague style clothes is a pop singer. Moreover, a conscientious man will appeared to be extremely neat while a casual man seems to be not that into their looks. As a result, appearances do reveal people's attitudes and interests in some case.

Turning next to the relation between society and the appearance and behavior of its people, as aptly illustrated by the fact that one can see that almost every woman in Arabic regions wear a veil as long as they are seen in the public, which can be accepted as a evidence that Arabic women seem not to be respected well as they should have and are under several restrictions-- although the restrictions are not indispensable to make them feel burdened. Nearly every tourist who have been to Japan would have received a heart-warm reception from the local hosts, as long as the tourists get along with Japanese, it is not surprised to see them either making a bow or saying 'thank you' or 'sorry' all the time. The appreciation of manners and culture in Japanese society comes into view just through the appearance and behavior of its people.

Thirdly, although people's look, dress and act reveals their attitudes and interests and their society's ideas and values in some respects-- different types of singers, woman in veil, to name just a few--among the daily life, it is a hasty conclusion that all the elements above can show the authentic circumstance as other factors, such as perceiving the history, can play a enormous role in understanding people or a society. Take the Japanese hospitality for example, what is hidden from the warm exterior are xenophobia and nationalism, and that is why brutal dolphin-hunting in Taji-- a place in Japan-- cannot disappear even many people and organizations came to protest against this phenomenon. In short, only through people's outward look can one misunderstand the ideas and values of a society.

In sum, it is unproblematic to define people's appearance to be a determinant to the extent that the conclusion will not be denied by empirical situation. And, in my observation by virtue of complicated composition of society, it is not effortless to know society as a whole than to know single people.
