TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."

I cannot agree with the statement that the absence of choice is a rare circumstance. Although our life experiences seem inform us that people always make choices every moment in their lives, by a comprehensive consideration, I find there are myriad factors that would possibly lead to the absence of choice, and thus I must hold a reserved attitude toward this statement.
One of the most significant factors that exclude people’s choice opportunity is the natural and material restriction. Consider maybe the vital choice between life and death. Everybody longs for living forever and nobody have the right to choose immortality. As Hamlet once said, “To be or not to be, that is a question”, unfortunately, that virtually is not a choice. Due to the natural and material restriction, we human beings might never get such a right of choice to determine our life and death on our own will, which may be the most crucial and desired choice for every person.
The other reason that limits our range of choice is other people’s influence, whether they are alive or they are dead. Indeed every individual’s life is not ruled only by himself/herself. On the one hand, confident men, who believe they can freely make any choice as long as their want, are always under the influence and indirect control of contemporary, such as their peers, their families and friends, many strangers who they have never meet, and etc. As Karl Marx points out that the essence of human is “the sum of all social relationship”. With the development of human world, any individual who live in the modern society would more and more depend on the association with the others, and then have less and less opportunity to make choice truly independently and freely. On the other hand, the thoughts and actions of people who lived in the past time can also shape today’s people’s ideas and deeds, and people also have no choice to get rid of their influences that not only circumscribe people’s range of choice but also their ways of making choice.
The last factors that I want to stress here is we ourselves. When we make a choice and comply with the decision to act, at the same time we also close the door of all other possible options that was not chosen by us. However, the prospect of the option that we have already made is uncertain. It is likely that we made a wrong choice that would result in a more and more narrow range of choice in the future. Eventually, they would perhaps reach the point that the door of any desirable option is closed.
In sum, I do not deny that we all experience a continual process of making choices all our lives. Nevertheless, whether the choices are true, I mean free and desirable rather than conditional and forced, ones and whether the right of choice is always truly in our hand are open to question. Without considering the limitation of free choice, the speaker’s attitude might be deficient, and the statement is very superficial.
脑袋晕的,想不出例子来,MS很阿狗,是不是偏题了?:L
