208The way people look, dress, andact reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society'sideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
Taking into account the trend of massiveglobalization, the increasingly fierce competition and complex social relationsat present, I can not totally agree with the assertion that the appearance andbehavior could reveal a society’s ideas and values; however, to some extend, itcould reflect people's interests and attitudes;
Firstly, since people could not always wearor behave as they really want, the situations should be considered in differentcases. In the free nations, such as the USA, people could always wear whatthey want to in daily life: business tycoons always suit up and smoke a cigarwith a big smile; university professors always talk solemnly and rarely smile;young people who are fond of Rock’N Roll would wear strange clothes withcolorful hair. To some extend the clothing and behaviors do reflect theirattitudes and interests in that case, however, in some conservative nations,such as North Koreaand some Arabic countries, the civilians are compelled to wear the same clothesand behave under limits of a lot of principles. As the common sense tells us,different people has his/her own interests and attitude, but in thosecountries, people could not even wear what they like and behave what they want,can we conclude that all the people in that country has the same interests; orthe same attitudes? Obviously NO!
Moreover, even in the USA, people are notalways wearing or behaving in the way they really like: when employees are atwork in a company or a factory, they are compelled to wear the uniform whichare all the same in the workplace; when people are attending a formal party, nomatter who you are, you should well dressed and behave as a gentleman orgentlewoman; when you are playing basketball, you have to wear your sportswear.People could not always wear what they really want to wear, behave what theyreally want, that is the reason I don't totally agree that people's appearanceand behaviors could not reflect their interests and attitudes.
In addition, In such a world full ofcompetitions, self-protection and falsehood, it probably should not beconsidered as reprehensible that many people are more likely to pretendthemselves, or conceal their interests and attitudes when facing thecomplicated relations and disturbance from others everyday. Therefore, what weobserve of people fails to well represent their real attitudes and interests.Besides, telling about a society's ideas and values which are rather intrinsic,with resort to outward or visible aspects of its people, such as their look,dress and act which is merely extrinsic evidence and feature, seems lessreliable for my part.
As to the second opinion, I could not agreewith the speaker at all. As we know, a person's value is the knowledge andjudgment to the surrounding objective things. People keep completing their valueduring their life time; it is the basic criterion to the world in the bottom ofpeople's heart which can hardly be shown on people's outward appearance. Wecould not conclude that people would like to harm the society just since hewears strange clothes or spitting on the streets. Moreover, even assuming thatthe appearance and behaviors can reflect people's ideas and values, a personmay have dozens of clothes in different styles, when he/she wears differentclothes, can we say he/she has different values?
In sum, the appearance and behavior couldreflect people's interests and attitudes in some certain conditions; however,more generally, they could not help people to tell the attitudes or interests,let alone a society's ideas and values. |
